The season points aren't up on the NASA site as yet so I don't know where we are points wise.

Yep, that's my buddy Kent Jordon. This is a prime example of how turn nine will suck you in if you touch the edge of the track. Pretty hairy crash eh... Kent was fine but the car was a total loss. John was able to build a brand new EVO in less than 2-months.

Turn nine can be killer!
Damn! I'm definitely going to put a cage in before long. That's damn scary.

Any luck on finding the problem yet?

I see you're in 3rd place now. Considering all the problems this year, that's great!

1 Greg Greenbaum 475
2 Jack Mardikian 400
3 Greg Collier 380
4 Team Hollfelder 245
5 Danny Poore 235

With the help of Tracerline dye and blue-light scope I traced down the leak at the water pump. It's either the gasket or the "new" pump itself. One more test should reveal the exact point.

Yeah third place is better than last place with four races to go in the regular season. But from here on out it's balls out, take no prisoners! ;)

How, exactly, do you get to be the national champion?

By getting lots of points in regional races or by winning the class at the nationals?
Or both?

Speaking hypothetically, if somebody wanted to be the national champion in, say, TTB, what would be a good approach? Amass points everywhere, just in the region, or what?

The answer is probably buried somewhere in NASA's billion-page CCR, but I thought I'd just ask somebody who knows.

As far as I'm concerned the inaugural "National Championships" is BS. It’s not a situation where they’re taking the top 3 drivers in points from each region and having them square off with one another. If you can afford thousands of dollars to tow you car to Mid-Ohio, and have completed five races, finishing last in each race, you’re eligible. You can even drive a completely different car in the championship race. Whoop da doo!

There are no contingency funds to help you afford the race, so it’s up to you and your sponsors if you’re so fortunate.

I would have loved to have raced Mid-Ohio this year just to meet all the DSM’ers in that neck of the woods, but at $10,000, and the regular season with four races to go, it ain’t in my reality…

Sorry if it sounds like I’m venting, but the last couple of weeks has been killer

Uh...you didn't answer the question. Nice vent, though. Next time, don't hold back. Tell us what you REALLY think about the national championship.

I take it, then, it is possible to become national champion in TTB just by running five events in a junker, then paying AMS to build a killer car just for one race.

Rich

OK... I've had two minutes to think about it... The Nationals is a big party where all the NASA members from around the country get together and have a party and get to race on a really cool track...

There is nothing different about this and Rolex, Grand Am, Trans Am, ALMS, and so-on and so-forth. These teams are funded by millionaires who want to play car car. It's all about the money. A couple of teams that I raced against in 2004 and 2005 are running Grand Am this year. They run as many races that they can, within a descent proximity to get the best bang for their buck. Steve Bernhiem ran the 24 hours at Sebring and it cost him $400,000.00. A bit beyond my budget but he has his law firm sponsors his car. He'll run half the season this year on the hopes that he might attract other sponsors to help for 2007... maybe. Even with, he'll still have to pick up the major part of the expenses.

And that’s all I have to say about that

Yes... except rent it, don't build it!

Crikies, I was just kidding. You mean, that's how it's REALLY done?

Well, then, how's this for a realistic strategy?

Find out where the national championship will be held in 2007
Run as many events there as feasible to learn the track (HPDEs, races, etc.)
Run five NASA races during the season to qualify
Crank up the boost to 35 psi for just enough laps to set fastest time.
Win the championship without ever winning any NASA regionals.

Seems to me that might work.
Of course, it wouldn't work for anybody who had to tow a considerable distance just to run HPDEs at the track. But if was nearby...like at Road America...it might be doable.

YES that's totally doable....

NASA signed a contract with Mid-Ohio since SCCA pulled out. SCCA pulled out because of the outrageous costs of renting the track, extra insurance fees, parking fees, garage fees, trailer parking fees, green fees, no pets allowed, fresh air fees, etc. etc.
I'm exaggerating of course...

So who has a prepped car in the area that they'll loan to Greg? Then he could just fly in for the nationals? :D

The most obvious car is the AMS Evo. It's fully prepped and a rocket ship to boot. Of course, this might pose a problem, since Greg is indebted to Mitch, a competitor of AMS.

I'd loan my car, but it is not race prepped. It'd never pass tech for a race group.

There are at least a half dozen companies that are renting racecars on the NASA forums site for just this purpose. By the time you pay the rental costs and the plane ticket you're back up into the $10-grand neighborhood...:beatentodeath:

Back up to $10-grand? Crikies, what do they want for the car rental? Or are they selling you a pitcrew as well? I'll have to go check out those NASA forums. WTF

The base-line for the car is $5000.00 with track support. Then you have to pay for 2-sets of tires at $1000.00 per set, then race fuel at $7.00 to $8.00 a gallon. In the long run it would be cheaper to tow my own car (but not by much)...
