So, Rich, are you planning on R.A. on the 8-9th? Tim, you're not too far from Elkhart Lake WI, any chance of seeing you out there? That would be  cool... Although it does sound like you've got a long way to go on the 'rage.:sosad: For what it's worth, I've got my brakes & such, just waiting on rear s.s. hoses and long wheel studs.

No, I'll be out of the country that week. My truck will be there, though, serving as the tow vehicle for Mike. The rest of the ricer racers from Cedar Rapids will be there at RA, but the only car they will be running will be Mike the Mechanic's Stealth (wait'll you see the BRAKES and 17x10 wheels on that mutha! Hoo boy! Wish I could put those brakes and wheels on my car to replace the Stoptechs).

I am planning to make the HPDE at Blackhawk Farms the following weekend (15th), but will probably only run one day to sort the car, check to see how much I have to do to pass race tech, and try to get an instructor ridealong to qualify for a race license. If everything sorts well, I'll run both days.

Rich

So Mitch has the motor apart and is taking inventory of the meltdown. The head turned all colors of hot blue, as did the top of the block. The tops of the pistons began melting to the cylinders as seen in the photos. Days of tedious machining took its toll in minutes of temperatures beyond any reasonable control. The task of seeing what may be salvageable is still at hand… we’ll see.

Yea not to much left out of that motor. Those expensive rods, cams, crank can still be reused but not sure about the head, block or pistons. Yea thats are worst nitemare but you will learn and move on is all that matters now. What about the turbo is that still ok?
What was the main cause of the overheating??

Turbo is fine...

I was running a plug at the end of the main water supply pipe. The outlet was the main inlet flow to the heater core. When that blew it was probably only a matter of moments to pump all the water from the cooling system. The plug was three seasons old. To do it correctly a loop of high temp hose connecting from that outlet to the thermostat-housing inlet should be done.

that is what i did on the motors from the past 2 years. I also have done this on my current 1, seems to work very well. I hate to hear that about your motor! I am also glad to hear that mitch is on it. Is there a guess-tament on when you will be back up and running?

Man, I'd love to do something like that. It definately makes a DSM owner proud! Let me know if you ever plan to attend any of the Races down here, I'd love to see it

you should write a DSM story book or something LOL id buy it !;)

We could get Rich to edit it, the DSM site printer to print it (hopefully not in the normal "DSMTuner sticker" format), and Chris could advertise it.

;)

Greg you could run a water pressure gauge. Nascar uses them specifically for reasons such as yours plus it makes sure the cap and hoses are sealing to full pressure. Or use a low oil pressure sender with a warning light plumed into the waterneck, granted it would be on until it gets up to full temp but that would onlt take a minute or two.
