I found a big old crack on my housing:cry: so its time for a new turbo. I wanted to see if any of you have had experience with any of these two turbos, DSM Green Xl and FP71HTA. They're on sale on Forcedperformance.net so i would like to buy one of these since there a bolt on for my 1g. I would love some feedback on these turbos, please and thank you.
 
Have you checked your turbo for shaft play. If the turbo is good, you can just replace the housing. Which will be much cheaper. I am in a similar situation. What kind of turbo do you have?

I haven't yet but I'm planning on boosting more anyway so i just want a whole new turbo. I have the stock 14b.
 
Either of the turbo's you listed are good. As well as the hx-35 which is a better option if your on a budget.
 
Im looking for more of a fast spooling turbo for now, maybe later i will go bigger with the hx35 or hx40 but for now i just want a bolt on that can produce more than my 14b. I was going to get an evoIII 16g but the prices for those were just to high for me for a 16g. Soo i saw these two on sale and they looked pretty good for there price.
 
I don't have an personal experience with the hta71. Looking at the specs, the hta71 should spool simitar to a 16g with solid top end and the potential to make 60-80 more horsepower.
A lot of people will tell you hx35, but beware. That turbo gets hyped more than i have ever seen on the net by people who have never used it. I have one on my car right now with the bep .55 housing ona 8.5 motor with bc 272's. Its a decent turbo, but don't let anyone tell you its spool is quick. It performs nothing like a turbo with a td05h turbine.

The green is probably a good turbo to compare to the hx35.
 
i get 25 psi by 4100 on my HX40 in the .55AR just fyi... the HX35 should spool much quicker around 3700-3900 its definitely no 16g, but when your in the 50 trim area its really a great turbo, and i can say from experience with the holset, its awesome. i also have bc 272s, i hate them. 9.2:1 motor.

I have a dnp manifold withe bep .55 housing on my wiseco 8.5 motor. I have srock 1g intake, ets fmixc and NO boost leaks. There is nothing wrong with my car. My hx35 does not reach 25psi before 4000 rpk. it doesn't outspool your claims on your hx40 either. I'd like to see your logs or see some other owners chime in who are seeing 20+psi before 4000rpm with a holset in 3rd.

That is the spool i'd expect from the hta71.
 
^your graph suggests you never reach 25 psi of boost at all. It shows a decent run to 20 psi by 4k and then a slow climb to a 24.7 psi spike at roughly 7k. I don't doubt the turbo is capable, however, your claims seem a bit out of proportion to your Dyno sheet. I'm only pointing this out because your claims could mislead people if they just take your word and don't look at your graphs. Either way, I respect you and your car, I just want to see accurate info presented.

it looks like your dyno pull was in fourth. Boost is climbing pretty early but slow.

it never would. Like i said, the hta71 should spool like a 16g or 20g.

Im really excited about this turbo. I think that even the HTA68 and 20g wheels are too large for the tdo5h wheel. Dont get me wrong they are nasty turbos and make great power but I think a larger turbine will show the real potential.

Im guessing I will see full boost (25+) at 3800-3900RPM while getting close to 50 lbs/min. Track results will show next season.
 
So, just to re-cap, it seems like the 71HTA would be better suited for the OPs concerns, right?

As for the 71HTA, on E85 it should be good for 450whp, right? And on 93-octane, about 400-425whp, right?

TJCTalon,I would really like to hear any update with regards to your TD06SL2 71HTA. I have used that turbine before on a 20g and currently use one with a billet 18g for my other (auto) DSM and it works really well.
Is your SL2 turbine in the 8cm housing? I may consider changing my td05 turbine to one on my 71HTA if it works out to be a good combo. Please post your results once you get it going.

To the OP,I don't have personal experience with the new Green but on paper it looks like it would spool slower for sure vs a 71HTA. I run the 71HTA on a 2.4L and it just... just spools fast enough for what I like for a street driven car while making a ton of power. I love driving the car now.

Yes, this is pretty much exactly right. I'm sure some E85 guys will push it further but for the most part those numbers are reasonable and accurate.

Why everytime someone asks about a certain turbo, someone always has to throw in a Holset. We know its a great turbo with alot of potentail, but OP asked about certain turbos, which I am also interested in but there is more talk about HX35 which I have no interested in neither does the OP. So you brought up he knows about it move on and stick to the topic.

I agree though. Seems every thread that has the word turbo people recommend a holset.

I know it doesn't seem to make sense but that is what I get in Link and nothing changed but the turbo. I have my actual and est. A/F to exactly lined up perfectly. With my billet 20g w/td06sl2 turbine the most I ever saw was 45lbs @24psi and I was at like 76% idc which seems about right. Even the idc for the 71HTA is up to 83% (same PTE 880's) which further confirms there is definately a big difference from the 20g. Again, the only thing that changed from that was the turbo. I keep looking over everthing in Link and nothing seems out of place. I am runnning it on a 2.4L with a ported head, evo III intake, etc. so maybe compared to a relatively stock 2.0 it's a higher flow at the lower boost level?.. I don't know.. Unless my Omni 4bar MAP is reading off or something.

EDIT:
Well, I found the problem. Since I posted this I have since found that after reinstalling Windows and Link on my laptop I had forgotten to change the default display properties for altitude (0 is default) the MAP sensor to 3,200 ft. This means the airflow I was seeing was not @ 19psi but @ 21psi which makes much more sense. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Also, the boost estimate preferences were still at 2.0L not 2.4L causing the BootEST displayed to be WAY off. After discovering this I don't trust the airflow numbers now as well. I will do more logs with the change and see how things look. One thing that is certain, the increase to 82.4% IDC is real (was 76% idc max w/ 20g @ 24psi), my wideband readings are correct so the 71HTA makes quite a bit more flow compared to what my 20g did .. just not exactly sure how much at this time.
