So i went to the track today. And on the second run down the track the car died about half way. I coasted to the end of the track and pulled over and popped the hood hoping to see a intercooler pipe off. Well i couldnt find anything wrong so i tried to start it. It would jump to 900 rpms and die out. After about 15 min of cranking it finally started. I drove it about 300 yards and it died out again. Same thing happened again after cranking on it and it finally started and died out about 30 sec of running fine. Now it wont start at all and i had to get it towed home. Its getting spark and its gettin fuel. I talked to someone that has alot of knowledge on dsms and he said it could be a relay befind in radio. Anyone know what the possible problem could be.WTF

it also has inline relays so you might want to check them alot of people dont know about them but i have a disk that has everything abd anything on it about 90-94 dsms and it says to check them along with your relays

those relays behind the ecu rarely go bad,, check your ecu like everyone is saying.. do you have any check engine lights? also are you checking the timeing by turning the crank and watching the cams spin and they all line up?

in response to reply # 30, his profile states it is a 96 gs-t, in which case he has no CAS. im not too sure i can offer any more advice that what has already been given though, sorry. Best of luck to you

I pulled my ecu to check it out because i cant find one. It looks fine. Nothings leaking and nothings burnt.

the power transistor is a module mounted on the intake manifold that basially sends spark to the coil's make sure its all plugged in... its to the right of the manifold and is a small square black box with a long oval shaped plug.
while turning it over does it have a nice even cranking sound or is there any pause's or funny sounds in the process?

check all your fuse's also read your manual there are ways to check a relay to see if its good or bad.. .

I have a 6 bolt so i do have a cas.

If you have a 6 bolt, then you do have a CAS.
Passenger side of the valve cover and the end of the intake camshaft is where you'll find it.
Not sure how to test it, but at least make sure it's plugged in nice and toight.
Since you have a 6bolt, you might want to pick up a 1g Haynes Manual for help in trouble shooting like this.
I've read that when an ECU goes bad, they usually smell burnt, or emit a foul odor much like rotting seafood.
Good luck man, and let us know how you fix this biatch....

HA i know what the cas i was just stating that i have one because someone thought i still had the stock 7 bolt in. As far as it looks the ecu is fine. If my transistor went bad. Would it mess with the spark because i think that my problem. Its not sparking all the time and its not the ecu or the coil pack.

Ummmm, I think he just answered your question about the power transistor....

I had a similar problem with my car except random one day it ran like crap and the next it didn't start, I didn't touch anything at all and I let it sit for a month while doing the head and put it all back together and it ran perfect. My story really doesn't pertain to your problem but it was similar symptoms. IIRC the path of the spark goes from the ecu to the transistor pack to the coil to the wires to the plugs so somewhere in there is your problem, just start eliminating them

I put in another ecu and it still doesnt fit my problem. Ive narrowed it down. The 2 relays behind the radio on the passenger seat. Only one of them kicks on and it not becuase 1 is bad ### i tried another one and it does the same thing. So 1 relay works which means only 1 side of the coil pack works. What controlls this relay?

I fixed the problem after many days of searching. The last thing i tried after was the power transistor and sure enough it was causing only half the coil to ignite.

Congrats on figuring that one out....
How did you determine half your coil was igniting?
Is there a procedure for testing the coil pack?
Is there a procedure for testing the transistor pack?
Did you buy another power transistor and simply replace your old one?
Did you clean it?

What did you do to fix your problem?

Well i pulled all the plugs and checked to see if they were gettin spark. And found out the only one of the coils was working. So i startd off by checking the relays behind the radio. Noticed only one was working. First thing i changed was the coil pack. Which didnt help so then i changed the ecu. I did some reading and foudn out that the recister sends the power to the relays so i went and got one off my friends car and hooked it up and waalaaaa spark. Put all the plugs back in and she ran great
