So i found a cheap GS with a blown motor, decided to buy it and swap in my rebuilt engine out of the RS. Everything if disconnected but i cant seam to get the drive axle out of the transmission MT. the knuckle is unbolted and the outside of the axle is loose but ive got a little crowbar and am trying to pry it out of the transmission but it seems to catch on something..should i really have to bang it so hard to get it out? Any advice would be helpful . Thanks

Just to be sure, you can scroll down a bit on this write up and see various methods to pop the axle out:

The only thing that is supposed to be holding in the axle is a circlip style spring. NOW that doesn't mean that something is not broken in the diff and the pieces are holding up the axles from popping out of the diff. Could have a broken diff.

I've had problems before and I had to drop the tranny out with an axle still in. I then pounded out the axle from the opposite side.

BUT, if you are just swapping the engines, you don't need to do any axles. You can simply pull and swap the engines while leaving the tranny/axles intact.

Ive had to place a pry bar in spot and use my leg to kick it out.

If you do this, make sure the car is held properly. Jacks, jackstands, blocks - whatever. Its dangerous to do but sometimes the only way.

I also always check the axle seal to make sure it didnt rupture the spring retainer in the center. Most times i just replace them because once the axle comes out it tends to pull the spring free and stretch it. If you get a new one, dont hit it with a hammer to drive it in, place a small piece of flat wood against it and lightly tap it in evenly around the edges.

Good luck
