Just wantin to know what i have to do to get rid of the EGR. Been thinkin about it and since i dont have anything better to do id like to take it off and clean up my intake a little. also... in the mornings when i just start the car and it hasnt fully warmed up, when im drivin it will die, but since its in gear it just starts right back up instantly. it does it sometimes when i shift to. it will die when i push the clutch in and then when i release it will start back up since im still rolling, just like im push startin it. i looked around on here for something like it and i found somethin close but there wasnt really any answers to it. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

If you dont really have any reason to remove the EGR, then I wouldnt even bother. You will just get worse gas mileage, and it will be harder for the car to start in cold weather. EGR helps the car cold start.

ok then i guess i wont worry bout that then. any ideas about the Stalling issue? Could it be the coil goin bad or the ECU or somethin like that? I was thinkin about it and sometimes when i turn on the A/C and its not warmed up the belt seals real bad. Do u think it could possibly be the A/C compressor lockin up. I seriously doubt it but idk maybe ive been thinkin about it to long.

No point to block off your EGR, I did, and havent noticed a differnce either way. with or without it installed. as for your stalling problem. check your spark, check your plugs. after that I cant really help. Hows the battery?

SIMPLE EGR BLOCK OFF JOB:
1. Remove the EGR (make sure engine is cold or you'll hate l life).
2. Find empty beer/soda can.
3. Cut top & bottom off the can and roll the aluminum out flat on a table or floor.
4. Place EGR valve on flat aluminum.
5. Trace outline of mounting surface.
6. Cut "gasket" out of the aluminum.
7. Install "gasket" between head and EGR.
8. Say "Hi" to your new CEL until you read up on how to do the resistor mod.

It's that easy. You can get more advanced in terms of multi-layer block off plates which seal the head, but allow the valve to continue to flow (to avoid the CEL), but I'll let you do some homework on that one.

Don't know that it will affect mileage any. I've not had one on my Talon in three years and consistently get upwards of 450 miles on a tank of gas around town. Fully built, untuned, no less.

As for intermittent stalling issues, remove your air intake and double check the condition of the wire harness that runs along the head next to the EGR pipe. They tend to make contact, melt through the insulation, and short out the CMP, resulting in an instant shut down. If you lose either the CMP or CPS signal, the ECU trips the ASD relay.

And here are a couple handy pictures of where and what: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259892

Dr1665, how do you manage 450 miles/tank???? I feel lucky when I get over 350!

ok i took my intake off and check to see if the EGR pipe had melted through that loom of wires and thankfully it hasn't. The wires were actually pulled back and zip-tied to another loom of wires already, so thankfully thats not it. Also with the EGR block off... would i be able to block off the pipe after the EGR valve and then block off were the pipe goes to the intake? or do i have to block it off before the EGR valve? Thanks for al the help and advice so far:thumb:

Heh. Maybe it's a 97 thing? I dunno. Higher CR engines are more efficient, resulting in improved economy, but I really don't know. My engine isn't tuned at all and runs rich as shit down low.

Don't feel bad. The Talon isn't street legal at the moment, so I've been daily driving the GVR4. I feel lucky when that hog gets 300 miles on a tank! I miss my Talon a lot. Nothing like leaving work on a Friday with 3/4 tank of gas and driving all the way to Irvine, CA before having to fill 'er up...

would it be worth it to swap out the ECU for a while to see if that might be my stalling problem. and would the method i stated above to block off the EGR be alright? Thanks

If you have an extra ECU laying around that you know works, then sure, but I have learned to always check the ecu last as its usually not the problem.

Your method of blocking off the EGR valve is alright by the way.

Then obviously you didn't clean the intake manifold when you blocked off the EGR because you would've noticed it has stayed perfectly clean. EGR craps up the manifold with burnt engine gunk. When I ported/polished my intake manifold and installed the MP 60mm TB I did this mod and aside from the CEL I was very pleased.

Well, you are right about the cleaner part, But as for if you are only doing this for performance, Dont expect much, just cleaner results.
