2G Door Handles Help! [Merged 11-7] broke broken eBay replacement repair handle outside

Just a thought, I recently found that my driverside door stopped working/ wouldn't open so I took the handle out and noticed that the L-shaped peice connected to the handle had been slightly bent. So I just took it out, rebent it to its original shape and shot some WD-40 on the actul assembly where the door locks to the door frame and my door is working as good as new. It didn't cost me anything and works great without getting a whole new handle. It was just sticky so that caused the L-shaped peice to bend. If this doesn't make much sense I can go into more detail I just don't know all the correct verbage for everything.

I had the new door handles installed, bolted everything up, stuck the rod into the hole of the clip, but when I closed the door and tried to open it, it still doesnt open. I was getting mad at this point, luckily I left my passenger door open so I opened the door again and this time I pulled on the door handle while looking at the rod, but it's only pushing the rod halfway down. Im guessing either, the spring is to weak, or there is something wrong with the rod. The rod isnt bent, its straight so is that L shape piece on the door handle. I'm probably going to take it to a body shop and have them do it for me.

Dont ever pay this much, or I will E-kick you in the balls!! OMG
I had this happen on my 2G's that I've owned. The door handles come painted black from the dealership, so on my old 95 GS (black car), I dodnt have to have it painted. I took it to a local bodyshop; they ordered the door handle from the dealership and installed it and only charged me $75 (parts and labor). That was 3 years ago.

I just had it happen 2 weeks ago on my current 99 GST. This time it had to be painted red and I took it to a more expensive body shop. Total with parts and labor = $115.

If someone is charging you more than $120 or so, then they are hosing you. ;)

Was that price for only one door or both door handles? Because both sides of my car are broken.

This post should be in the Problem Diagnosis, Newbie Forum, maybe even Interior/Exterior Forum. Why the hell would you post it in the Bolt-on Tech forum? WTF Thread moved.

And how did you not find this article posted in the Articles section?

Especially when you were supposed to have read all the articles before posting a question? Please everyone, do read the FAQs and Tech Articles so we have less repetitive questions. And post in the correct forum.

I didnt know where to post this, plus I didnt know there was an interior/exterior forum until just a few hours ago. I found that article, thats how I replaced my handles, and this is why I posted my problem up.

Those prices I gave, were for one door handle. Most any body shop should be able to get 2 new handles from the dealership, paint them, and then install them and charge you no more than $250. But if you shop around and price out the job with several body shops, I'm sure you will get quotes closer to $200 for both handles.

thanks for the link Karbon, thats the exact same problem with mine. The rod has too much play in it and when I pull on the new door handle the rod doesnt go all the way down. Thanks! I will give it a shot again this weekend.

I can't afford to advertise these gizmos as it's only a little item I offer to help out those of us who are tired of replacing door handles every few years.

Moderators: If this post is viewed as an ad please delete with my apologies and I'll be quiet. I'm only trying to let people know theres a better way to fix the door handles without requiring a new handle and/or a repaint job too. -thanks
Some "ads" more than deserve a free post. :thumb:

If you do decide to go to a salvage yard and get a door handle then make sure you take a Ratchet wrench because a regular ratchet is a PAIN IN THE ASS to get behind the door glass easily. Now if they will let you bust out the window then it is no problem LOL. Getting the handle out is easy puttin it back in is the pain because of on stupid nut

it just broke off last night. :( where do i even begin to look for a replacement? or should i just take it to a shop?

Ebay has a whole butt load of them. Just type in the Ebay search talon/eclipse and you will find one for your car.

If you wanted a cheaper way of fixing it ($3 I guess), check out this article:

If you are buying a new handle, I suggest using E-Bay or look in the classifieds or something. A shop would probably charge you an arm and a leg for a new door handle, but it depends where you go. If you do buy a new handle, these tech articles should help:

Nice upgrade, and welcome to the boards. People on here are nice-as long as you try to do some searching before asking something that's been answered a million times. The door handles can be a PITA, so set aside some time to do it.

well the handle lost connection with the wire latch thing inside the door, so the handle moves in and out.... so i took off my door handle (with the window still up) and i cant for the life of me get in behind that door handle to take that screw out from the back... is there still another layer of door panel i gotta take off to get to the back of that door handle?
