I've looked everywhere on how to pull out the old one and can't find info. Is the 2g write up similar? And I can't seem to get to th back rod to unhook it. Do I need to take off the locking latch? Thanks!

There are a couple of bolts that hold the handle in. Then with the Window up undo all the connectors that hold the door rods for the lock and door lever from the handle. One is a pita to get to. These are all inside the door. From there go to the outside of the door and it will come out at a downward and out angle.

Thats my issue that inner rod i cant figure out how to get to it.

The easy part is getting it out, the bastard is getting the new one in and getting those rods hooked back up.

I did mine before I had it repainted...I'm trying for the life of me to remember how I did it. It took two of us, I remember that.

I did mine with two people as well. It is way up there. There is a place were you unhook the rod from the plastic piece that holds it to the handle. or you can unhook the plastic piece from the handle. Either way is about the same difficulty. It is a pain to do. I think the plastic it holds to is green or yellow. Looking from door panel side it will be top left corner. I hope this all makes sense LOL

I just wish the 1g had the same write up as a 2g. That second rod connects the lock? I might just break it off or something, My buddy and I looked at it for 30mins and couldnt figure it out Its been 1\over 100 here this whole week and my patience is thin.

The rod goes into the plastic retainers. The plastic retainer has a 'hook' piece to lock the rod in. One side is a hinge, the other has a little hook part on it. I typically use a pick tool or small flat screwdriver. I believe the hook end is on top. You need to pop that open, then you can wiggle the rod out. Take your time, get a flash light in there and mirror if needed so you can see and understand what you're up against.

Ill try the mirror trick out thanks, IT will just be a matter of trying to disconnect it after that LOL

Plus 1 on the glass. And you will need that long skinny screwdriver too. And getting it out IS the easy part. My plastic clip broke. I was able to get one from the junk yard when I got my handle. Take your time. And take the glass out, you will get a better view.

I have my glass out, the two bolts out, the doorlock cylinder out, but the last clip (the lever that opens the door) will not come out. I worked on it for an hour last night and I had to stop before I took a blowtorch to the damn thing. I tried pblaster, pliers, a screwdriver, nothing would pop the damn clip out. Any suggestions?

Can you remove the whole actuator with it and work on it off the car. I took mine out and back in years ago when I had the car painted but I don't remember being such a PITA.

Ok cool, I'll try that. I'm painting too. :hellyeah:

I realize this is an old thread but it was the first that came up when i searched.

The easy way(took me 20 minutes and 10 of that was figuring it out since it was my first time.

Pop the metal retainer off that holds the lock in place, then pull the two bolts for the handle. Remove the 3 bolts that hold the latch, and the one that holds the power lock actuator(if equipped). Now work the handle out. With the latch unbolted it gives the rod enough room to come out so its out of the door and easy as pie to unclip.

Reverse process for install. Seriously a 20 minute job requiring a phillips screwdriver(door panel) a flat blade screwdriver to pry off the clip and rod clip and a 10mm socket with extension for the bolts.

10 years later here we are! The problem is you can't attach the rod when the handle is outside of the car because the rod won't travel far enough down to get the handle back into place. Almost impossible.. UNLESS!! Take out the three torque screws and 2 10mm phillips screws from the side of the door holding all that stuff tight. Also another important one bottom right 10mm phillips screw behind the plastic. This should allow everything to wiggle enough to attach the handle to the rod from outside, then pressing it down and into its place. Make sure everything is attached including your lock ring and fasten it back up. 20 minutes.

I'm going to have to pull the driver-side door handle and lock soon so hopefully this thread helps. The reason I have to pull it is because years ago some bozo stuck a house key in it and snapped off the tip, making it impossible to lock or unlock the car from that side. Hopefully I can remove the cylinder and then take out the offending piece of metal and don't have to get a new cylinder.
