Difference in 1g and 2g 4g63 motors

There are many differences between the four versions of the DSM (1Ga, 1Gb, 2Ga, 2Gb). 1G's started out with 6 bolt engines, in 91 the Ignition system, Throttle Body, Fuel Rail, and Oiling system changed. In 92 the Oil Pump changed from Straight cut to Helical gears. In late 92 the 7 bolt engines were introduced. I don't know all the differences for every part, that's what CAPS/ASA is for.

Identifying and documenting all the specifics might make for a good graduate engineering project if you feel up to it.

Not to mention, it’s such a broad question. Do you mean with the long block or anything / everything that bolts to or attaches to the components of the long block? It can get deep really quickly.

If the focus is on turbo engines only, good news! The oldest existing DSM-related resource still available on the internet can help:

Differences between 1G and 2G Turbo DSMs

A physical, visual difference is the way the engines mount, both engine to transmission and engine + transmission in the bay as a whole.
- 1G engine block has provisions for 3 mounts and the transmission has 1
- 2G engine + transmission assembly is the exact opposite, the transmission has provisions for 3 mounts and the block may provide 2 but only utilizes 1

Also, the 1G engine block uses 4 total fasteners that hold the transmission and block together. The 2G uses 5 - the block has an additional web of material with an additional threaded hole to mate up with the 2G transmission. This focused on the bolts in each case that thread into the engine block, so it is not showing the bolt that threads into the transmission on the side nearest the firewall, see: 1G 7bolt versus 2G 7bolt engines.

Crap in a hat! Talk about trying to drink from a fire hose! 🤣 Amazing amount of technical info on this forum, huh? @OneYoungBoi - way to kick the hornet's nest!

Seriously though, great question. Props to you for asking it. So many figure "baahhh, an engine's an engine. They both are from a GST and say 4G63 so they're the same."
