dont forget to sand and primer before painting it. itll come out better.

I am painting my dash and I was wondering what is the best paint to use. Also can you guys send me some pics of some painted dash panels. red if you have it.

Some people use Krylon Fusion, some use Duplicolor. Hope this is what your looking for.

Go poke through the gallery, there are tons of painted interoirs. I did mine using a Fabric & Vinyl spray for the (gasp) vinyl parts. For the plastic parts I used Fusion. FWIW, I found that using a primer is a big no-no with either material, especially the vinyl/plastic guage surround on 1G's. That red paint on my center console is all pealing off and I had to buy a new console set, which I am now opting to leave black with just red for highlights.

I recently painted my 1g, and the results were better than I expected. I used the Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray for the door panels and all of the vinyl pieces on the dash. While I used Kylon Fusion on all the hard plastic pieces. I don't have pics at this time, but it came out nice. As they say though, it's all in the prep.

What prep work do you guys do before painting?

what i did was...first wash the part with rubbing alcohol...then i wash it off with soap and water...then i let it air dry...then took it out back and painted away...

I was wondering if anyone has sanded the hard plastic parts on there interior? You know to make it look smooth, kind of like fiberglass...

It is doable but some things to consider:

Much of the interior is vinyl, like your door panels. You'll have a mismatch of texture and none.

A lot of the dash is curved and will be difficult to sand evenly. You will risk having lots of waves and bumps in the dash unless you have a lot of experience sanding.

Unless you have a proffesional-grade random-orbital sander you probably won't be able to get an even dash.

Most importantly; the plastic is going to melt while you sand and ruin most sanding discs. You'll have to wet sand it to keep it cool and not spend much time at all in any one area. You'll also need a variable speed sander set at its lowest setting.

Read in: bondo/fiberglass it or just leave it textured. Unless you smooth the whole interior it is going to look very out of place. Whatever you do make it match.

ive been painting parts of my interior also, well basically doing a whole make over.

those with the gray/black interior would know what im talking about......(1g)

i took the door panels off and prime/painted them black.....left the dash panel or whatever it is alone since its already black, the entire dash is gray, left that they way it was....

remove the intire gray dirty carpet (stock) and replaced it with walmart auto universal black carpet (used this in another vehicle i owned, shit was nice).... laid the carpet down just like stock was, cut slots for the seats to be put back in place. remove the eagle emblem from the door kick thing (the thing people normally step on when getting into the car), sprayed that black, and replace the emblem. thru on some black pedals
and was planning to get some race seats (black) but my moneys tight so i brought some black type fake leather type seat covers, for front and back, cant wait to get them in.

ill post pics when its complete

heres pics on the new/unfinish interior of my tsi...
sorry bout the pics, took them with the phone so there not the best quality. cant find the batteries for my digi.

which krylon color is closest to 1996 monarch green pearl, I dont feel like spending 8 bucks per 5 oz from the dealer.

i want to know if there is a special way i shoul go about to prep the dash example clean or anything like that your help would be appreciated thanks

Im not sure how great of an idea this is to paint your dash. I would scrub it down really well with soap and water. Maybe hit it up with some prep spray afterwards.

is there any way i can change the color of my dash then without havig to worry about chipping

Use vinyl dye, it'll stand up to the elements better than paint...but prep work is the most important part. Clean the area well with a harsh cleaner like mineral spirits or sem. Paint it to look stock or black. Rice colored panels are out...actually, they were never "in" for me.
