Guys all your stuff looks very nice... GREAT WORK!!

-->NOW HELP ME!<--

I am doing up my interior to (not to the cool extremes you guys did). I have VHT Premium Finish Plastic paint in my room already to go. I am going to star this week! But first I got questions....

Somebody said the prepping is the most important part.

What do I use to prep?
Do I need to stay with the same brand of paint through out the project?
What do I use to clean with?
How many coats should I apply?
Should I lightly sand between coats?

Previous owner has already painted the parts. In this case VHT recommends sanding first.

Does that sound right?
Anything else I should do?

Sorry to steal the thread, but if I posted ANOTHER thread, people would be pretty pissed!

Thanks, Andrew

I have been car showing for years where I also had a painted interior that I painted myself. I won many shows and was posted on the mini-truckin web-site. I know now i have a 1 gen. DSM. But anyway, it doesn't relly matter what type of paint you use as long as you preclean the area with alcohol and prime the surface before paint. I actually used krylon from a spray can bought at Wal-Mart for under 5 bucks a can. hope this helps. :talon: Oh yea I almost forgot. Make sure that you clearcoat the paint job after your finished that is what will amke it stay on the plastic.

On some of my peices i just blocked it with 220 grit sandpaper, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and sprayed some primer and then paint. Its pretty easy, and its only chipping off on peices that get rubbed on a lot.

I was wondering where i could go to get my interior painted the same color as my car, I know you can probably go to the local paint shop but i just want it to be put in a airosol can or something so i can do it myself. is there a place online where i can buy this from?

Im pretty sure you can buy vinyl paint in a spray can at any Autozone store..im not sure about the color selection they have for them though..

Yes you can paint the vinyl on your seats or on the door panel, but you can not paint any other plastics with it, :toobad: it will "eye" up very easily, and later it will flake off, even with prep cleaning. If you want that really high gloss car paint finish on your dash you have to put layers of epoxy on it sand prime and shoot it with an automotive paint gun. Please don't ever spray anything in the car, you'll get over spray everywhere :notgood: , just take the pieces out to paint them.
As for factory paint in aresol can, not out there as far as I know. Meijers and most automotive stores carry duplicolor automotive car paint in a spray can that does have a nice shine to it :D , but you have to prime. You might be able to get your actual Car color but you have to get the paint code off your car, i think its on the drivers door, someone help me out with that. I think thats what you want to know, take luck :thumb:

I dyed parts of my interior with Autozone vinyl paint/dye and it came out fine. Looks like OEM and its holding up just fine.

Check my gallery for pics.

Most of your local paint shops should be able to mix any paint color in an aerosol can. Including factory colors.... Even some oreilly autoparts stores can do it.

Thanks! i thought their was some way to get it in a can, the previous owner deceded to paint one side of the doors in the car and their are some spec marks but nothing noticable i just wanted to finish it so it didn't look so out of place =)

ok i have done this on 2 cars and it looked relly good, go to wal-mart get some cans of the color you of Krylon plastic fusion paint in an aerosol can get some bulldog adhesive and prep it with something like laquer thinner but has to be for plastic make sure you prep it really good "or it will fisheye" or i myself used some really fine sand paper also and then sprayed it with adhesive twice waited for it to get sticky and spray painted it, NOTE: when doing the heater/AC knobs ya gotta wait for the paint to get sticky or ya get runs galore.

If you got any other questions just ask.

Unfortunately I didn't save it the link, but there is a shop online that will send you factory color paint in a can. It's on the site somewhre if you search for it. I believe it was $19 for a can.

hey guys

i allways wanted to paint my interior all black...the dash and evrything right..but i dont know what kind of paint to use.....like i dont know...and do i need a paint gun..or could i do it with spray cans...like i want this to look like its factory painted:cool: ..... thx

No you don't need a spray gun unless you want the paint to look like the paint on your car. They sell spray paint made specifically for your interior at autozone or any car place you have. You could also use high gloss acrylic spray paint.

we dont have auto zone in canada....would you know the name of the company that makes the spray paint for the interior of a car:confused:

I have decided to paint my interior plastics. But I have a few questions before I start.

1: What grit sand paper should I use to sand the panels down?

2: "Some one told me I have to use bulldog" Is that a cleaner or a primer?

I would use a red 3M scotchpad, available at Wal-Mart. They won't leave straight scratches but just scuff it up. Wash with soapy water and use a paint that is recommended for use on plastic!:D

I recently painted my interior pieces, and I'm very happy with the results. As far as prep work goes, there is no need to sand down the trim pieces unless they were previously painted (other than factory). Do however thoroughly clean all the pieces before applying paint. I did do some light sanding in between coats to rid of any imperfections. BTW, I used VHT Premium Finishes plastic paint... it worked wonders, really good stuff.

actually, no. There is a sub-forum in the "Newbie Forum" labeled "Appearance/Interior/Exterior"... that is where this goes.

Moved to the Appearance/Interior/Exterior Forum.

I have painted interiors on a few different vehicles before.

I did a Civic interior once. We wanted to do it "right", so, we bought an expensive kit. It had a chemical that released the mold agents in the plastic. Then we spent hours sanding. Then we had a body shop spray the parts and then clear coat them. It looked good.

Then, a few years later, I decided to convert my entire interior to black. I already have the black dash, but the lower pieces are still gray. I first tried vinyl, and had poor success. Then I tried a semi-gloss Rustoleum (sp?) aerosol paint that is designed for plastics.

Honestly, both jobs turned out to be equal in quality. Looking back, I don't feel it was necessary to do all the work that we did on the Civic, after my rattle can job turned out just as good. I'll get some pics within the next couple days and I'll post them up.

I have given this a try on a couple of interior pieces and its holding up well. I picked up a plastic spray for coating things like tools and what not. cant remember the name all of a sudden but it rubber based I put a couple coats on the panles and it looks like oem fiinish and holds up very well. I will look up the name when I go out side today and post it but so far love it.

I sprayed mine with brake parts cleaner, then with a spray on black vinyl dye. I didn't want to sand away the texture of the panels. It looks like it came from the factory that way, check my gallery.
