You stated before you don't like doing this, so why persue it when it is what he wants to do? Leave the guy (and this thread) alone. If it turns out tacky, that is his choice.

Personally, I saw go for it. What ever makes you happy.

Hey, I just started mine this past weekend. I did two pieces in the center dash. I'm pretty happy with the results. Besides, I like to stick out in a crowd. Why look stock? My grandma can roll out of a dealership stock.

There ya go ;) Stick out in the crowd of the 2G. What color are you using? If you want a Shift boot to match your paint check on ebay, there is always a seller there who has them in any color you wish. He charges about 10.00$ and 5$ for shipping.

do what you want to do. but remember to develop some sort of theme throughout the car. don't just randomly paint things with what paint you have laying around. also sometimes pick an accentuating color to your paintjob, instead of just matching paint. and please, please don't use bright yellow whatever you do.

here's a pic of mine. black and silver to match the autometers, all red lighting, gray leather seats, black guage pod with silver mounts, silver and black pioneer stereo, working on silver shift knob. sorry no night pics.

hey i was wondering if anybody has painted that black inner plastic trim that goes across the top edge of the dash and down around the sides by the side vents in the front of the dash. i'm not really looking to paint the actual grey dash material. just that black plastic trim in between. has anybody done this or even removed the 1g dash? if i can realistically do it i'm gonna paint all that little black plastic in between white.

I removed my dash. I don't think the black plastic part separates from the other dash parts (i.e. dash speaker area and gauge cluster holder). If you still plan on doing it, maybe you should take off the dash and mask whatever you don't want to paint very carefully. You might have a hard time around the driver's side. Just a suggestion.

you'd have to remove the entire dash to paint that part.

damn. i was looking at it and that's exactly what i was thinking. i'll check it out more still maybe cuz it could be really cool if i could pull it off right. just lots of patience and precise masking i think.

i want to paint my dash in my 1g eclipse gs im just wondering what is the best paint to use on the dash so it wont get tacky in the summer, crack when i touch it,or drip easily?

you can do a search for interior painting, you will get a lot of REALLY good info from past threads. basically a common way to go as far as plastic painting is krylon paint which bonds to plastic pretty well and is made to do so. but as i said, do a quick search, theres a few other ways mentioned.

If you look in my gallery you can see my dash/doors/seats. I painted the vinyl/leather with dupli-color vinyl spray. If you prep properly it comes out very well. I also used Dupli-color plastic on the plastic paint. THe dash has been like that for a year now and i have had no chips, scratches or fading.

Dupli-color = :thumb:

is the vinyl die hard to use? and where can i get it from?
also what is the best way of prepping the plastic pieces and vinyl pieces to be painted
everyone has dif ways of prepping its confusing.
and one more question what kind of paint should i use such as satin, glossy,or flat?

No its pretty easy. Heres a link to buy it:

http://www.levineautoparts.com/semvinandpla.html

You should buy the vinyl prep also. Clean both surfaces with soap and water (use mild soap, like dish soap). On plastic if you use fusion, you can just spray away. Spray in light coats 12 - 15 minutes apart. Should put on about 8 - 10 coats. For the SEM, use the vinyl prep, then sray away away. pretty sure its the same, 10 coats 12-15 minute flash time. Some people sand away the stock grain before they spray, but I liked the grain, so I didn't do any sanding.

Colors are up to you. If you want super glossy dash, use gloss black, and use glossy clearcoat. A not so glossy dash, use glossy black paint and a satin clear coat. For a real flat looking dash, use flat black and satin clear. Try them on a test panel first so, you know what it'll look like. Its easy, but VERY time consuming. Don't rush it or it will look crappy. Good luck! :thumb:

thanks alot i can't wait to do this.
no one around here on long island will have a 1g dsm like mine.
as a matter of fact all the dsm's around here look like they are going to fall apart any second. Poor cars if i was there daddy they would look brand new again LOL.

well im planning on painting all the gray black and all the black blue. i think it would look pretty cool my whole engine bay is all blue black and chrome so why not do the interior blue and black.

i was at aids auto today is duplicolor vinyl spray paint good?

I used the dupli-color vinyl spray on my dash and seats and it is holding perfectly. I spent a lot of time on the prep, and a lot of time on the painting though.

For prep i scrubbed the vinyl with warm soapy water (dawn dishsoap, it has no additives or ammonia) and a green scotch brite pad. I then rinsed it off with room temp water, wetsanded with 1500 and repeated the cleaning process (you will be amazed how much grime comes off the vinyl). Then spray a bunch of very light coats (i used about 7 or 8). I used a satin finish on my black and it looks awesome. It has a decent shine to it when its exposed to light (looks clean, freshly armor-alled not stupid and glossy) but it isnt too shiny. On my dash i used 2 or 3 light layers of clearcoat over it just to make it a little more resistant to dirt and grime.

I have also heard good things about the SEM dye.

what is a good spray paint for repainting a dash and center console??? Also where can I pick some up??? Thanks.

ok well there are a couple you can go with...most of the people here will probably say duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint ....i would use that for the door panels and dash (anything thats vinyl) thats what im redoing mine in tomorrow....and on the center console and anything that is hard plastic or plastic at that...i would use and i used krylon fusion paint....its great stuff....post some pics of your finished project...good luck...oh you can pick these up anywhere...i got my fusion paint at ace hardware for about 4.50 a can....probably can find it cheaper at walmart...the duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint is about 3.50 a can at walmart too....

Thanks Ill def. have to go and get it. Good luck with yours to and send me some pics. Later
