Ok so I have been having cooling problems for about 8 months now. I've replaced everything to do with cooling minus the thermostat. I have looked for this answer but it varies quite a bit. So I would like feedback to narrow it down. If you could please post the HIGHEST temperatures you see while driving when it is 90+ outside. Even better if you can post with ac and without. I hit 225-230 at times which in my book is overheating but I could be wrong.

Thanks a ton for the responses in advanced!!!

the 1gs run a bit cooler then 2gs...the max i seen cruising is around 205-210 at about 100 degrees here in texas...on wot pulls goes up to 225 or so..

Ok I should also add. I only see the 225 when stopped at a long light or more than 5 minutes of stop and go city traffic. If I am one the highway it is never above 205.

sounds normal to me... ...i think I'm seeing hotter temps cos my radiator is pretty old..need to order a mishimoto..

Well I know one thing with my car is I got slim fans. eBay ones, and I have a feeling that might be why it is creeping up so much at stops and city traffic. I have a short route fmic so I had to ditch the stock fans. I'm going to try one stock fan if I can get it cut up enough to fit. Also have been thinking about ducting some of it so the air goes straight to the radiator instead of escaping different places around the radiator.

Thanks for the replies guys!

np just outta topic...what rims are those on your pic? they look pretty nice...got the same car..

My car runs around 180-190 F and stays there. I bought an aluminum radiator and 2 9 " slimline fans off of ebay. Ever since any cooling issues were fixed. Not too mention I hardwired a relay to the fans so that I can control them anytime I need them.

your fmic is likely part of your problem, the thin stock radiator is not made to have a large fmic sitting in front of it blocking the majority of its airflow. without an aftermarket radiator with better cooling capability your almost guaranteed to run hotter then stock. installing a pusher fan is also a good idea even after upgrading the radiator. thats not to say it will definitely overheat, but thats can make the diff between running 205 and 225+ temps, and i have seem more then 1 dsm regularly overheat from this issue.

secondly, you need to think about the age of everything and how its been maintained. when i worked in an auto service shop i saw cars come in with cooling problems that were several years newer then any of our 1gs, and when you hook the pressurized coolant flush machine up to it, its not uncommon to see rust and grime get spit out of the radiator or other parts of the coolant system.
very few of us bought our 1g new 20 years ago, and theres no way of knowing how gummed up the radiator or coolant passages are with crud without doing a pressurized flush, or at least rigging something up to blast your hose through it and see how dirty what comes out is. unless water comes out nearly as clear as it goes in, then your prob not getting correct ammount of coolant flow at all times.

I would definetly recomend running a 10 or 20 degree cooler thermostat. Helps keep the temperature down a little bit but not to the point where you won't have heat in the winter.

Also, water wetter is a good idea too

The Radiator is a CxRacing. I did some research here and most people had great results with it. So hopefully thats not it. Because if so, there's $145 down the drain. As far as thermostat goes I still have the stock one I am guessing. That is next to get replaced. Any suggestions on thermostats to get?

I'd stay with 195* T-stat since the ECU is mapped for that water temperature.

Just get some more air that can be pushed or pulled through the radiator.. and have you done a total system flushout including taking the hoses off the radiator and flush all of the crap that resides in the bottom of the radiator..??

Even on the hottest days, the temp gauge in my LASER sits almost at the 12:00 positon - which is just over 200 degrees with the T-stat open.

My car sits right in the middle of the quarter and half lines. Im also only running 1 fan infront of the radiator a cheap slim from ebay.
