Clear hood?????

Im wanting to put a clear hood on my eclipse and my idea is to lay down some wax paper over the hood and cover it with fiber glass resin, and using hood pins to hold it down. Any ideas on how I should do the skeleton of the hood so that the height of the hoods are the same and there is now awkward ridge between the fenders and the hood. Has any one done something like this or something similar. I have just finish building the motor for turbo, and did the wire tuck, and painted everything so its all nice and shiny. I love driving my car with out the hood and I dont ever want trouble from the cops due to not having a hood so it would be nice to have a clear hood.

They used to make clear hoods, and i remember the ad being of an Eclipse...just look hard for one. You will never be able to make one that looks a little nice, not even close.

I'm pretty sure the ones you see in magazines and such are for show only. I don't think there is one that can be usable for more than just moving the car around in a lot.

Maybe you already knew that. If you make your own that would be something.

the resin wont hold. it'll be too brittle. lexan will work. just expensive.

Awesome I will look into the lexan, just did a quick search any ideas on where i can get a gallon or 2 of the resin. Is there a way to mold the plexi glass sheets to fit the car.

The original clear hoods were made of Lexan. It is expensive but these are durable, just not likely to hold up to the filth. It'll be yellow or black asap.

Well ill be putting a clear coat on both sides to avoid discoloring.

hahahaha I would laugh my ass off if I melted the hood to the motor just imagine a motor vacuumed sealed, and im not a ricer so I dont expect stickers or Fiber glass to increase hp

And seriously, pics would be awesome after seeing you make one. But if I were you, I would just find the lexan version (skeletonless) and rock that if you're after a clear hood.

well my welding skills are non existent sadly, so the skeleton made by aluminum would have to wait, for now I would like to settle with just the clear hood.

Pretty much anything clear will yellow. The black is going to be the usual under hood grime which will kick up no matter what you do to protect the hood. Once you add in the high engine bay temps. These marks become stains and will result in a horrible looking hood.

This is why the people who have these hoods really have 2 hoods, and only put this on at shows (as someone had previously mentioned)

A framed hood with a complete mesh covering would be clearish, wouldn't stain, and would offer the benefit of completely venting any heat.

Resin alone probably won't hold. Not the resin you're thinking of.

You need something like PMMA or polycarbonate. PMMA is the generic name for Plexiglas. If you get a sheet large enough and find some way to evenly heat it to a bit over 250*F, you can thermoform it. It will need hood pins.

After some ideas being thrown around between you guys and some friends of mine im going to create a clear hood, based on the stock look and put vents and mesh in the hood so, I can the best of both a clear and vented hood, ill be using a layer of resin then a layer of vary thin mesh, or wire to create a mesh pattern of my choosing then another layer of resin and inserting the vents, final step clear coating both sides of the hood about 3-4 coats to protect shine and discoloring. I will post pics as I start and finish this project as well as a write up.

I know how; idle the car in the hot sun. That should evenly heat it to around 250F.

i remember reading where the gold supra in the 2f2f movie had cut-outs on the cf hood that were made of lexan so you could see the engine. it also had louvers molded into it. funny thing is on the prop & stunt cars the engine was a huge photo.
