Im wanting to put a clear hood on my eclipse and my idea is to lay down some wax paper over the hood and cover it with fiber glass resin, and using hood pins to hold it down. Any ideas on how I should do the skeleton of the hood so that the height of the hoods are the same and there is now awkward ridge between the fenders and the hood. Has any one done something like this or something similar. I have just finish building the motor for turbo, and did the wire tuck, and painted everything so its all nice and shiny. I love driving my car with out the hood and I dont ever want trouble from the cops due to not having a hood so it would be nice to have a clear hood.

I know how; idle the car in the hot sun. That should evenly heat it to around 250F.

My friend's black hood only got to 175* in direct sunlight this summer at a show. There are PMMA and PC's that can get quite hot before they start to deform.

You've seen that little Lexan spark plug cover I have. It's lasted almost a year without any yellowing distortion. But it was also cut from 1/4" Lexan that runs about $130 a sheet. :sneaky:

I didn't think about that 250F thing. When I made a cold air box (out of some more 1/4" stuff) I had to get it hotter than 250F. That was just a generic temp I pulled from a spec sheet when I searched for PMMA.

Most manufacturers publish a "glass-transition temperature" for their products. Just get one that's pretty high.

My idea was already mentioned once with the supra thing. If you already have a fiberglass or carbon fiber hood it would make it easier. Cut and mold the center of the hood. If you doing it clean with nice cuts you can use the piece you cut out as a mold for the insert... after you get the mold finished and ready for paint you could do a fade away with it. I think that would be sick. Ppl would be walking up oh look a normal hood OH! WAIT! THERE IS A WINDOW THERE! COOOOOOOOOL LOL :p just my 2c ;) good luck man cant wait to see it

I'd be laughing my ass off, that's for sure. I don't think "cool" would be what I'd call it though.

I have to jump in and say why don't you list your mods on your car, as a shopping list for theifs..The clear hood would be ideal for a theif to see what he can grab off your car in the middle of the night..

Have fun with the clear hood...

With clear hood if you hit some road constuction it hard to remove road tar off of plastics like lexan with out stains
