Just replaced the timing belt on my 2g 7bolt no balance shafts. I wanted to make sure these timing marks look correct. I am pretty sure the top cams are aligned correctly it might be hard to tell in the picture, but the lower mark doesn't seem as easy check it out. Thanks

Thanks Brian, I didn't include the picture of my oil pump gear because I removed the balance shafts. However I did still set it right on the timing mark.. I rotated the engine several times I believe 12 and got all the same marks on every 6th turn.

Sick. Did you get a timing kit off ebay or where did you get yours. I want to learn how to set timing it doesn't seem all that hard. Let me know man! Congrats on setting yours btw.

On my cams I had those timing marks and then there was different ones on the back that were etched in. I tried the white dots on the front and it was wrong. I then used the etched in marks on the back of the cams and they were right. When I used the white dot marks it kept stalling my car out when I came to a stop and it burned up my valves. I had to rebuild the head and then I used the marks on the back of the cams and havent had a problem since.

I have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, there are no timing marks on the cams. There is timing marks on the cam gears (might be what you're talking about). And maybe inside/outside instead of front and back? My guess is you were setting your timing wrong.

No I bought all of my timing accessories from the dealer including belt, hydralic tensioner and idler pulleys. I won't recommend anything other than genuine mitsubishi parts. It wasn't too hard to do but it was very time consuming and a little bit of trial and error. I pretty much just followed the vfaq. Plus if you do it wrong the first time you run the risk of ruining your valves. So be careful :thumb:

Not timing kit I meant the timing tools. Saw some on ebay but maybe cheaper somewhere else? Let me know.

I actually made my own tool for compressing the auto tensioner. I just threaded the battery hold down bolt. I believe there is a vfaq on that as well. For the tool to used to put tension on the belt, I used 2 allen wrenches which I found how to with a search on here. If you get any of the special tools get that one.

Did you make sure #1 was at TDC when you timed it?

Yes, I verified this with both the crankshaft timing mark and a long wooden dowl I put through the spark plug hole, cranked in a clockwise positon until it was at it's highest point.

I used the timing marks on the outside and it messed my head up, then when I had the head redone I used the inside marks and it runs perfectly now.

Correct. You always want to time by the inside marks and not the outside marks. You just confused with me front/back.

I'm a timing newb here. So there's timing marks on both sides of the cam gear? Why would the outside marks not be as useful as the inside marks? At the top of the thread, are those inside or outside marks on the cam gears?
