timing marks?!?!

hey everyone i have a 95 tsi awd. I am doing a 1g cas since my Cam sensor went out on me. While i was trying to set the engine so the timing marks all line up my cam timing marks are pointing straight up at twelve o clock. I was pretty sure they were supposed to be at 3 and 9? I can take pictures in the morning but can someone tell me how my car could even run properly with this. The car ran like a dream tell the cas went out/.

Timing for the cams is suppose to be straight up at 12 o Clock. Your suppose to set piston 1 to TDC, top dead center, Which requires the cams to be timed to noon

sorry guys i was looking at the wrong marks, the dowel pins are straight up at 12 and the two notches on the outside of the gears are in at 3 and 9 o clock perfectly. Now i just need to stick a screwdriver in the #1 cylinder and determine tdc

If the crank gear mark is lined up, that will make the #1 cylinder at TDC!!!

That is correct. You just want to make sure #1 is at TDC and align the Balance shafts if you still have them
