so i just put my belt on and i put the camshaft at 3 and 9 o'clock and i put the crankshaft aat 12 o' clock(i think thats where TDC is????) and i put the oil pulley at 10 o'clock . My first question is do the red circles need to be where the green circles are??? I put them there and i think my camshaft pulley was off by a couple teeth because when i tryed starting the car it would sort of start then turn off. is it because of my timing??? i get a back fire (my friend who is a tech said its because the timing is off). also does it matter if the crank TDC is in compression or exhaust TDC if so how do you tell which TDC is Which and what one do you need it to be in. If you can help try to explain with a picture im a visual learner thanks

YES, your timing is WAY off, your oil pump needs to be lined up to the mark there, and when you release it should fall counter clockwise.
I think the timing mark on the crank should be at 11oclock, I cant remember exactly and cant make your picture out its kinda derty =)
Get on the timing mark guide .....

Timing Belt VFAQ

This is the way it should be set up when your timing is correct:

Cam gears are lined up perfectly
The oil pump is lined up with the spot you have marked on your picture
The balance shaft gears arrow is also aligned in its appropriate spot (i believe somewhere around 10-11 oclock)
AND (notice on your crank there is a small white dot/groove on it)When you put your crank pulley back on with the lower cover installed it should read 0 on the cover for TDC. The motor needs to be at TDC with all the timing marks lined up. Thats the easiest way to do it. With the limited knowledge about this subject it seems, you shouldnt have tried this yourself.

i have no problem doing this im just a visual learner i need to see it not read it. i have replaced my transmission with no problem and i have swapped an engine. i'm just not familier with where TDC is. I have put it at 12 and the car just back fired. i'm capable of doing this but i learn a different way then you do. i need to see it

you need to just line up the marks and when you put the belt on go from the right side and work around you might have to turn the cams just a little so that they line up once you put tension on the belt then before you start make sure all timing marks ase lined up pefect if not retry the same procedure until you have it perfect they should all line up
than using a ratchet or wrench turn the crank twice mking sure theres no binding and that the cam and crank line back up
dont worry if the oil pump dosnt line up perfectly

if you wold like i will be putting my timing belt back on tomorrow and if you havent got it by than i can take pics or even a video for you just email me and let me know

See the bolt to the left of the crank angle striker plate. Just to the left of the bolt is the timing mark. So turn your crank counter clockwise about a 1/2",and line the notch on the striker with the mark just to the left of that bolt.

the car almost starts!!!!!! it like im just a little off :notgood: that would be great to put pics and a video up that would be very helpful. when i turn the crank its a litlle hard to turn in two places then it gets really easy in two places thats just the pistons going up and down??? it fells like the rods rotating from going up on the left and going down on the right (if that makes sense?)
