Timing marks

ok i get the timing marks aligned on the cam gears perfect dowl pins strait up go to put the belt on and it wont go on both gears it will go on one but it will just sit on the other gear like it needs to be moved over so the belt will sit on the gear. if i get the belt on both gears my marks are off 1 tooth. why cant i get the marks aligned perfect with the belt on?

Use a straightedge through the cam gear bolt centers. The timing marks can fool you if you don't have a point of reference. They're very likely off. The dowel pins being pointed up is just a way to make sure you have the right marks on the timing gears together, not how you set the gear timing properly.

yes, the gears should have 2 marks on each one, and run a strait edge from the outside exhaust mark to the outside intake mark and the inner marks should line up with the strait edge. If the exhaust cam moves counterclockwise .5 tooth after getting the belt on, turn it clockwise approx. 1 turn so it sits strait with the straitedge when the belt is on.
