OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

My car was overheating at an unsettling speed as well. Turned out it was a faulty ground wire that was causing my fans to not turn on. However I also wired a switch to my dash so I can manually turn on my fans - works well! Haven't had a problem since.

I think my fans are fine. It kicks on when it gets about half way and the a/c fan turns on with the a/c on... I think it's the water pump. How do I go about doing a compression test? If I can do it at home??

Mines doing this as well, just randomly leaking, I can't see where as I just moved and have just a cruddy emergency tire jack, not trusting getting under the car with that.

I'll put some coolant and it will leak out from the bottom of the motor under the waterpump/alternator.

I'm almost for certain the water pump is trashed, as my temp guage says it only gets to 130 and it's normally 190/200

I pulled the rad cap off, started car, barely wanted to over flow, :(

for me, i found out that it isnt as simple as a leak(of course) LOL my engine is getting so hot after driving that it boils out, so its more of a problem of figuring out why mines over heating.

as for you, if you are seeing leaks coming from the cam gear side, it is either the oring for the water pipe has gone bad, or the 'weep' hole in the water pump is leaking(need a new water pump, which means a timing job is in your future) if only it were that simple for me :(

If you see fluid and steam coming from around the water pump then its a pretty good bet the water pump is bad. It may still be working, but like said above that o-ring is toast and chances are the pump is fixing to kick the bucket.

I wouldnt drive it until you can get it replaced or into a shop to get verification that thats the problem. If that water pump locks up, not only are you gonna blow the head gasket, but its gonna lock up the timing and you may bend a valve or something.

Head gasket is toast. Good chance the head is extreamly warped at this point.

Pull the spark plugs out and spin the engine over with the starter, I would expect to see water shoot out the spark plug hole.

The gallon of water you added went one of a few places, On the ground from a busted hose, in the cylinder bores, or in the oil pan.

no water is shooting from the cylinder holes, and i found out that the water is evaporating in the form of steam when the radiator cap is taken off.

The only other thing I can think of to cause an issue like yours is the impeller of the water pump is slipping on it's shaft not allowing the water pump to circulate the coolant properly.

Hey guys, I have a 97 Talon tsi AWD turbo and it seems to overheat everytime I drive it for about 20 minutes or so. Nothing out of the ordinary whenever I start it up, temp is fine and where it should be, but it raises quit alot after about 15-20 minutes and I have to pull it over, pop the hood and let it cool off and it's getting quite annoying, thought I would get some suggestions and see if anyone would be able to help me out. Appreciated much!!!

When is the last time you changed your thermostat? Coolant? Is your fan engaging?

+1 Check thermostat. If the fan dont come on,the thermostat is not working.Which causes, overheating.

Could be thermostat. Check coolant level and that you got no air in the lines. Are you smoking from exhuast. Hopefully not a headgasket or waterpump issue. Your over heating to fast.

I say a change thermostat a easy fix if it works. Also check your coolant. And if it hasn't been changed you might want to change it when you change the thermostat. My friend had a bad thermostat with old coolant.

For your problem, check the small rubber hose on the bottom of the engine where the coolant line goes into the oil cooler. you can see it if you stick your head under the front bumper. Mine busted there and it was a huge pain to find. I ended up taking the exhaust manifold off to get at it.

Changed my Thermostat Yesterday and put coolant in it and it's still seems to be having the same problem, my fan does kick on, one of them is unplugged do to AC or something, Bought it from the Previous owner that way. Water pump is new, Radiator doesn't have any leaks... I guess I'll have to try and flush it and go from there?

So recently my dsm has been overheating around town and at idlle but it has been fine on the highway. I replaced my thermostat today and drove it around down for about 15 minutes and it was fine so I thought the problem was solved. However, as soon as I pulled into my driveway it started heating up again. So I am pretty stumped. Also, I usually fill up the coolant from the reservoir but am I supposed to fill it up from the thermostat housing cap ? Thanks.

You fill up the coolent front the thermostat housing cap..Check coolent, make sure its there is no air in the system and check the fans to make sure there running...To me it sounds like the car is being air cooled instead of fan cooled LOL..

To check for air you will need to take the radiator cap off and crank the car up. As it warms up the t-stat housing will open up and if there any leaks in the system they come out. Recap when finished. As far as the front mount it has nothing to do with cooling the car when at idle. It is most likely your fans are not operating efficiently or at all. You can always add fans in front of the radiator to help push air through. Good luck.
