car is becoming a money pit- is this repair too much? please help, (pic of bill)

Seriously i'm sick of fixing this car... i no longer have a garage and can't work on it myself. I got my serpentine belts replaced a week ago because they were squeaking like mad / snapped, and now a week later, they are still squeaking. I brought the car in and they now tell me that my crankshaft damper pulley is missing the rubber, and i need a new one... seems like something the shop should've noticed when they did the belts the first time.

I don't want to get ripped off here... is there anyway i can get the part for cheaper? they can get an aftermarket one for 150 or so which brings the cost down to 352.00, but i'm a student and am just getting destroyed financially lately.

This was mine before right as I replaced it. It had started squeaking a bit different than it normally did and it was my DD.. Never really thought much of it until it got louder and louder and a lot more consistent, not just upon startup.. I drove it all over with the occasional pull or two, 300 miles a week or so..

You are damn lucky it didn't come apart and tear the hell out of the front of your motor.

Once they show ANY signs like that ^ of deterioration, they are a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off.

Here's a link to what mine looked like before I caught it. It's much more subtle than Tom's, but you can see a few posts below that it separated with just a light hit from a mallet (not good).

Well, something like this (without all the spelling and grammatical errors) would be easier to read:

Ok. This is super simple.

Step 1: Get a new shop. They are rediculous.
Step 2: Tell them to put the belt back on correctly free of charge since they clearly messed up the first time.
Step 3: Drive the car home.
Step 4: Get a used damper off someone on here or buy a new one from extremepsi or stm.
Step 5: Loosen the alternator tensioner (12mm) and take off the belt.
Step 6: Jackup the drivers side of the car and take off the front wheel. This is not neccesary but makes it much easier.
Step 7: Take off the splash gaurd that has a hole in it. Not the one in the fenderwell.
Step 8: Use a 14mm socket and remove the 4 bolts that hold on the crank damper. (Easier if you leave the car in gear or use an impact)
Step 9: Install the new damper and doe everything reverse for instalation.

From now on when the new belt squeaks a little pop the hood and check the tension. Tighten it a little and problem solved. Every one of these cars I've seen has had a belt squeal. If you use a good belt and some belt conditioner you will have this problem alot less. If you use a cheap belt and no conditioner you might end up adjusting it once a month. This is probably the easiest fix you will see with these cars and if your trying to save money you will def have to pick up a book and learn how to do the "little" things yourself. Good Luck!

You have to loosen tension off the A/C compressor too don't forget. That's where the 12m wrench comes in handy, especially a ratcheting wrench. But that's if you even HAVE the compressor hooked up, which I don't see why... you're in Canada Aye! Loosen up the alternator adjustment bracket and alternator mount bolt (down near engine block, also 12mm, it's a nut) Then push the alternator towards the block to loosen the belt. Before doing this stuff, it really comes in handy to have the wheel turned to the left -to gain access. On stock cars I believe there is a shroud in the way of view so remove that (not sure how many and where the clips are on that one, you're on your own there)

12mm socket, standard extension, ratchet, and a small mallet. When loosening the bolts, do try your hardest not the turn the engine counterclockwise. That's what the mallet is for (or bash the nerves in your palm however you want to do it ) just give the ratchet handle a quick rap with the mallet until the bolts break loose and viola, finish threading them out. Reverse for install. Torque those puppies to 18ft/lbs or just goodntight with some loctite if you don't have a torque wrench.

Can't believe so many think $160 is a rip-off, especially in Canada. I think too many DIY'ers are out of touch with today's prices. Evening this called for only an hour (which would be the minimum) they would more than likely add on a fee for the car being so old and in a place where it's going to be rusty due to weather.

OP you can do it yourself but is it worth it? Pay for a tow then find a garage or freeze your testies off? I'd say no way in the winter.

Get an OEM dampener from the dealer, and change it in your driveway. And don't cheap out and buy one from a parts store...go OEM only on the dampener.

Unless you want the car to turn into a money pit.

If you really want to argue this, his first question was what should he do. In which his question was answered and in which he asked for a picture "how to." This was answered by a link the FSM by born2tune. So really, his question had already been answered in a much better form than yours. And really it's people like you who just want to bi*** about the other members on here that make people think negatively towards this.

Welcome to online communities. They're full of different personalities that don't always mesh. Everyone has to check their ego at the door and not let criticism bother you as much. Granted, sometimes people bi*** and complain about the stupidest details when reading a reply. They'll make unnecessary comments on things that piss you off. Sometimes you see bickering that shouldn't be wasting space on our site. But it happens, and it happens on all forums.

Maybe Calan could have just ignored the way you structured your post and not said anything about it, since you were just trying to help. But he's also read more posts on this site and posted more helpful replies than everyone in this thread combined - many times over probably. He's had to endure poorly written and formatted posts for years. And though that might not seem like a big deal to you, since you don't post much here, over time it can be a pain in the ass for those who spend a lot of time here helping others and reading through everyone's posts.

I would prefer that he (and other site leaders) didn't publicly criticize members for stuff like this in tech threads, simply for the fact that it takes the thread way off topic and requires a moderator to spend time cleaning it up. So how about we stop bickering over details. The number one goal is to share information and help others, and that isn't being done when people are arguing over shit like this.
