I'm looking into buying a car strictly for weekend fun and to attain my goal of low 11sec passes. My only problem is that i've hit a wall between the awd 2g eclipse,rx 7 TT (3rd gen), and the 3000gt vr-4. I know that all of these cars have there downsides, but which car is the biggerst money pit and lest reliable with heavy mods?

I have two buddies with RX-7s, one has standalone and a T-66 on it, runs 10s. The other is mildly tuned and runs low 13s. They BOTH have broke down on multiple occasions. The other car you mentioned, a 3000GT is more or less a big ass car and for the same amt. of $$$ You could have the 2G GSX running circles around it. My vote is for the GSX. A 1G is better for a weekend warrior though in my opinion. The 2G is a better looking car though, shouldn't have sold my 98 GSX....

Maybe I am being a little cocky by saying this but i think that DSM's have the best power-to-money ratio.

first of all the GSX costs less than half of the other two. Second of all do you want AWD or RWD? Third, the GSX will have the cheapest mods by far. Forth, what kind of powerband are you looking for? GSX and VR4 are all hole shot while the RX7 is all up top. Personally.. I myself would get the RX7 because I love rotary engines.. BUT I dont have that kind of money to buy a TT RX7 .. so I got a DSM. If you are asking what is going to cost less you might as well get the DSM now cause it sounds like you dont want to spend a lot.

Actually, the money isn't an issue. Also, It's not about rwd or awd I just wanted to know what you guys thought was the most reliable car for constant 11sec passes.

all 3 platforms are not known for their reliability. But, for constant 11 runs I think a dsm with a forged 6-bolt would be able to take it all day long. The 3000GT, I would have to ask my friend as he owns a VR4 so he could answer that better. RX7, the rotary engine is known for needing rebuilds much more often than normal engines no matter how little or how much mods they have.. expect that one to break in the long run though a well kept up rotary will be able to take much more of a beating then the other 2 engines in stock form race per race.

I sold my 3000gt VR4 for a very clean 1g DSM.

First of all, in order of reliability, this is how it would be ranked:

1) DSM
2) 3000gt
3) RX7

From experience,

The DSM has a very bad reliability record, however the 3000gt is just as bad, except it is harder to work on and its costs twice as much to fix the same issues, simply because you have double the engine and all sorts of useless crap to go along with it.

The Rx7 on the other hand could be either the worst or the best. the TT Rotary engines in FD3S's are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! However, if you have the car professionally dyno-tuned then i would say it could be a pretty reliable car, assuming you had no engine problems and prayed to the maintenance gods then it would be the best out of the 3. Although, To get an FD tuned correctly, youll end up blowing at least 2 motors before you get it right. Remember, ANY knock/detonation on a rotary engine will completely ruin it.

So my vote is the DSM. Youll also notice that DSM guys are different from most ordinary tuners. Most ordinary tuners will tune their cars because they love their platform even if it sucks, DSM tuners on the other hand, tune their cars because it is a good platform, even if they hate it.

my .0002 cents.

I am also going to have to go with the DSM. If you are looking for just a weekend racecar I would go with a nice 1G AWD.

The RX7 will be more of a maintenance problem than the rest at that lever of power. Rotaries are finicky little beast and a few wrong moves and the whoel thing needs a rebuild. When they run good they make a shit load of power and can run with the best of them. The after market is also alot more expensive.

The 3000GT is just a HUGE car. It would take a ton of power to get to your goal. With weight and big power comes broken parts. There after market is around the same as ours.

The DSM will be the cheapest and with the right parts, same for all cars, will go that no problem. I think the reliablilty is more becasue most of the people on this board ar younger and this is there DD. If it is just for raceing them I say go for the one that makes you the happiest.

11 and reliable? Not from a street car. Certainly not from the 3KGT nor the Mazda. At least with DSMs you can find spare parts lying on the side of the road, but it's such a plodding pig to start with. I'd say to definitely go with a 1G for it, they were put together a little bit better.

I may be the only one saying this, but my dsm never broke down on me, unlike my honda civic which left me stranded 3 times. Go with the dsm fo sho :thumb:

Honestly your best bet with a reliable 11 sec car would be a domestic. A mustang or camaro with a supercharged 302 or 350 (depending on your flavor). Double the piston area = half the stress to get the same output.

Just double the strength of the motors components.

Any car running low 11's is going to break down a lot however like Defiant said, the parts for a DSM will be much cheaper and easier to find. I would get a 97-99 GSX, swap in a fully built 6 bolt with a 3065, TRE or Shep tranny and just fix stuff as it breaks.

Very true. An LS1 car with a minor bolt ons and a 150 shot with slicks will get you there no problem.

When looking at cost, it is a lot cheaper to use 8 stock 302 pistons, than 4 exotic dsm pistons.

Just to clear one thing up as well, I have been thinking in terms of pump gas.
