best 38mm wastegate

Im looking into getting a new turbo setup w/ an external wg, who would you say makes the best wg? Right now im looking at either tial or pte 38mm if anyone has experience/input on these or any other wg help me out! Also how much hp or boost can i run on a 38mm before i need to get a 40mm? Thanks!

They are both great makers, but also keep in mind that they have new V-band (MVS) & the traditional bolt on. The choice is yours, i favor Tial since they been making WG longer then PTE. Not saying PTE are bad, just never have had the chance to try them out, or the Vband style.

One of the few reasons why someone needs a larger wastegate is if they run a large turbo on a low boost setting so it's not "how much boost", but "how little boost". Say a 35r at 10psi; you need to bypass a lot more exhaust with the large turbo to run 10psi than you would at 30psi that would use a smaller wastegate.

Thanks yea ive heard a lot of good stuff about tial too and i was leaning more that way, but pte was about the same price slightly cheaper. Is there any benifit to running a v-band over a normal bolt-on?

Emusa will work just as good if not better than Tial or PTE. There isn't much to a wastegate. It's like buying a B&M short throw shifter when you can buy an ebay one for an 1/8th the price. I compared my ebay short throw to my friends B&M and there are zero differences.

Almost everything is made in China just some parts are shinier and have a cool name stamped on them. Some ebay parts and "big name" parts are made in the same factory. Stop paying for the name and start spending your money wisely.

its called supporting your supporting vendors. with out them we wouldent have half have of the stuff we do now, and with out supporting vendors the dsm community wouldent be were its at now or any other community for that matter. granted i do have a ebay 16 on my car now but do intend on buying the real deal when i can afford it. i dont support ebay one bit. and to the op sry i dont know to much about diff waste gates and what not, but from what i have read i would go with tial.

The vendors should realize what they're doing and make changes in their pricing in order for the crowd to afford their products. The vendors are getting the products from China for a $1 a pop and selling them for 300x their investment. There are few vendors/companies that actually have their products made in the states.

Aside from this, I have parts that cost more than your entire car (no offense just showing that I do support vendors/companies) but when it came to my wastegate I bought an Emusa because there is NOTHING to a wastegate therefore reproducing them and selling them at a cheaper cost is fairly easy. I have yet to hear a horror story of an Emusa wastegate failing. I'm just trying to save the op money and direct him in purchasing a good product that will perform.

TalonDave used to have a XS Power gate on his old setup....my buddy Jeff bought the same gate for his setup. When you supplied air to either one of these wastegates, you could hear air leaking from somewhere....most likely around the diaphragm and downward into the valve chamber.

At the same time I had a used TiAL 38mm gate sitting around that didn't leak one bit when the same air pressure was applied.


Sure you could take one of these $60 Chinese knockoff gates and work out all the bugs on your own and it may perform as well as a $220 TiAL gate which is made in the USA....but what isn't fair to consumers is the PTE gate being assembled entirely of parts that are made in China that is being sold at the same price as a TiAL gate which is made in the USA. People will automatically see the part is made by PTE and assume it's good, which isn't always the case.

Notice how you said diaphragm Justin. Like I said there isn't MUCH to a wastegate. The ONLY problem that ever arises is the diaphragm but from what I've seen the Emusa gate has zero issues whatsoever. I'll be using this on the HX40 you rebuilt and sold to me.

Right, but you want to buy a new product that you can bolt on and not have to f*ck with for two hours to find a leak that shouldn't be there to begin with.

Would you buy new tires at 1/3rd the normal price which look exactly like a high-buck race tire but leak like hell around the rim?

It's a matter of at what point does something goes from being a good deal to being a huge pain in the ass.

It's not as simple as that. What typically happens is the companies that are contracted to make the parts make a run of about 2-3x the number the original vendor ordered, they sell the original order to the vendor at the agreed price and then flood the market with the rest at substantially lower prices to get them sold quickly. The vendor who actually spends the money to get a part made pays more for their stock than the resellers who buy off the rest of the lot.

I do also remember finding that the EMUSA gates work really well, but only after they're disassembled to remove some casting flash that tends to tear the diaphragms. Fortunately, they can be rebuilt with TiAL parts if necessary.

This is my look on ebay stuff..YES there is some really legit stuff and if you know what your looking for and how to find it then its worth it. Other then that i look at what kind of damage can come from the part failing. For example if i buy an ebay crank or turbo and they fail, thats a lot of possible damage, with probably no warrenty. Generally if it has moving parts i tend to stay away from ebay.

What justin was talking about with the diaphram leaking and 2slow4utsi saying there isnt much to wastegates, imo the diaphram has a lot to do with the main purpose of a wastegate and if that part is failing from the box why would i want it and more importantly why would i trust it in my car?

I'll take my chances for $49 shipped. If something arises then I'll go another route but I don't see myself running into any problems. There are a lot of people running ebay gates with little to no issues and saving a lot of money in doing so. I don't want to argue or point out any more factors I'll just leave it at that.

To the op, go Tial or PTE but if you want to save some money and have a product that works you can always get an Ebay gate or Emusa.

There is zero evidence that I've found that states an Emusa gate has failed or has had problems with the diaphragm. If you did some research you'd realize that the Emusa gate is an exact replica of the Tial gate and if you wanted to you could buy the Tial guts and replace all of the Emusa guts and still save $100.

FWIW, I know I've read a lot of the ebay gate threads on all sorts of forums and one of the arguments that always comes up is "would you really trust your engine to an ebay wastegate?"

That arguement gets me every time, because it seems really foolish to trust your engine to a wastegate, period. That is what your engine management is for. Are there really that many people out there running around with no form of overboost protection outside of a silly piece of silicone impregnated piece of nomex?

As far as the ebay vs name brand, people have their own ideas about what is acceptable and have usually made up their mind which camp they belong to. Trying to argue the point is usually like trying to argue religion- lots of energy expended for little to no change in the other party's opinion. It seems like a much better idea to just stick to data.

Tial all the way!

The v-band is superior to the bolt on because of it's easy installation and removal. The bolt on style takes a little longer to get on or off, but both will perform equally.
