belt WHINE

Figure out which belt it is and adjust it OR if it's fraying, cracking or chunked, you'll need to replace it. That's assuming it is a belt and not a bad turbo.

how would i tell if its the turbo? yesterday after i replaced the vc gasket, i took it for a drive an i noticed that its not spooling like it should and has a different pitch of sound to it, makes my wastegate sound.

but i think its not spooling like it should ### when i did the vc gasket, i undid the neg batt cable to be safe and i think that reset my SAFC,

To check the turbo, remove the intake pipe that is connected to the compressor housing of the turbo. Take your finger and hold onto the center nut. Move the nut side-side up-down, it should move slightly but not much. If it touches the housing at all, it'll need a rebuild. Check the fins for damage as well since you are there.

As for the SAFC, one of the other posts you made on this subject, one member replied that it has an internal back up battery so it shoudn't remove the saved trims according to him. Can you take a picture of the SAFC to see which model it is or do you know off hand?

The whine you hear, is it idle or drive? On the gas or just off gas? Spool up or spool down? When does it happen?

its an APEXi.. a little bit in idle, but mostly when it revs up. The turbo sounds different then it did when it spools up.. i mean i only messed with the valve cover... how could my turbo be fine one day then another make sound.. .. just seems like it doesnt spool fully.

ok checked the play in the turbo.. it has quite of bit of play and when i move it back and forth i hear a clicking sound???

so is my turbo fried?? and how does this happen it was fine one day change the vc gasket, and now its junk???

APEXi makes the SAFC but there is the SAFC, SAFCII and Neo. That's just the funny thing about cars, stuff can just happen all of a sudden. There are no electrial connections to the turbo so anything you took off wouldn't affect it. Boost leaks can make the turbo work harder and ultimatly prematurly destroy them. Check for play and do a boost leak test like I stated in the other thread. As for the SAFC you'll need to search on that or wait for someone else to reply with more information on that subject.

I can back up a whine from the turbo. I had an E316G which was whining but didn't have too bad of shaft play. I went to rebuild it, took out the thrust plate and had bearing material clogging the oil journal from when it was on my old engine.

its just the SAFC. so i need a new turbo? are u saying its more then likely not a belt whine. but the turbo,. ### it sounds funny when it spools

I said it's possible it's the turbo, you need to check it though. Is it the orgional turbo?

Check the belts too since you questioned them. Are you throwing a CEL?

everyday damn day something new.. no its not the turbo checked it an yes there is quite of bit of play.. have a e316g but need a wideband, turboback coming.,

ok now i went outside turned it on so i could position the sound , revved it up a couple times, now i noticed that there was smoke coming out of my manifold where the gasket is. i have a leak>? could this be my lack of boost?
still doesnt answer about my whine?

so how will that tell me where my whine is?
will my car run without the other 2 belts
and can i do this with out removing the engine?

Don't want to scare you or anything..:(

But you might want to just check very carefully your belts, my Timing belt just busted and I sent all 4 pistons into my valves. Check out my post if you want to see what not having a good timing belt does to your innards:barf:

My turbo went last year and I don't recall any significant whine, just a little loss of get up an' go. But when it went it started spewing smoke.

As for your accessory belts. Take off you power steering and A/C. and your alternator. Start it up and listen, give it a couple of revs and if nothing put your alternator belt back on and do the test again, if not then put you A/C back on and do it again and finally your P/S belt. if you get by with no whines from any of them you have narrowed it down to your turbo, maybe!

Then do a boost leak test and make sure your system is sealed good.

ok ill do it tomor.. too dark tonight/

but i think i found my leak.. my exhaust manifold gasket leaks out of port #1 which probably is why im not boosting properly.. yey another gasket... how do i post videos??
