Whenever I crank the car up cold the engine belt squeels pretty bad. The belt is in good shape and the tension is tight. Any ideas?

Might not be the belt, pulleys squeels too. Get some wd40 and spray around your pulley bolts(or the rotating part of the pulley) and see if that quiets it down.

Also keep in mind that your belt may be TOO tight ... To help identify the loud belt, either spray wd40 or take a small amount of grease and put on the ribbed portion of the belt one at a time. start up after each. Like mentioned you may have a noisy pulley as well.

This is a race car so I only run the alternator. It stops squeeling after 5-10 seconds after it cranks and it usually only squeels when its cold.

Just because the belt is in good shape doesn't mean it won't squeal. I would clean all the pulleys that it runs on as well as just replace the belt.

Either the belt is worn, the pulleys are dirty/greasy, or the belt isn't tight. Or.... possibly all three.

I agree with Gravedigger... If it was a matter of one of the pulleys having a shot bearing (like an idler or something like that) you would have the problem consistently, not just at startup on a cold start. It's definitely a belt issue. Now, i'm not assuming anything here about the OP, but, it really sounds to me like it's time for a new belt, regardless of whether or not it appears to be in good shape. Granted, the tensioner can be adjusted to take up the slack, but, for the whole $10 or whatever it costs for a new belt it doesn't seem worth the effort to troubleshoot it unless he just bought the one that's on there like last week.

Just my .02.
