would anyone be able to tell me if i have a short shifter or not? when i bought my eclipse it had an aftermarket shifter knob on it (a wooden ball by hurst) but the shifter itself is only about 3 inches above the center console. what is the normal height for our shifters? is it possible the last owner installed a short shifter and how would i know?
1G shifters sit much much lower than 2G shifters. Your shifter is probably stock. It just looks shorter and smaller because you have a small ball shift knob instead of the stock dildo looking shift handle they originally came with......

Yup, the shifter in my 1g is stock and it sits really low with a 2g shift knob on it.

As far as the 2g's go, do the B&M with the metal kit. I just took mine out of my 2g and swapped both pieces into my roomates GST. It was always one of my all time favorite mods. Whenever I would drive a 2g with a stock shifter after that, I HATED it. I was so spoiled. LOL!

Also, I keep seeing ads from someone on Trader that's making another metal bushing kit. I bought the EGR blockoff's from him and they were great quality, so you might think about picking up the shift plate bushings. They are a lot cheaper than MachV sells them for.

thats another reason DSMs get a bad rep about reliablity.. its only as reliable as the owner makes it.. rather be safe than sorry.. and do it right the first time.. im buying the symborski kit..

is machv the only place to purchase this?

Nice archeology in the 2gnt section :thumb:

I havent seen it anywhere else other then machv

dont forget the cool sticker that came with it guys!!!! :thumb:

they come with stickers!!!, if anyone isnt using there stickers i am willing to pay for them!!!!, LOL

i've heard of ppl shifting and touching buttons on there decks, but has anyone ever been racing and shifting real hard and like broke the faceplate, LOL, that would suck

can someone clarify something for me really quickly, i always seem to get it confused. i always thought a short shifter made the throw shorter, but it seems like it also makes the actual knob sit lower.. is this true? does it do BOTH things?

i just put in my B&M short shifter along with symborski metal shifter bushings..

install was pretty straight forward.. and easy.. got my B&M SS from www.andysautosport.com pretty good price and was in stock and came pretty quick.. got the symborski bushings from machv

i set it to the 35% setting.. and it feels great.. i would imagine the 50 being too short for my taste.. the shifting feels tight and solid.. definitely hear the thing click into gear.. one of the best mods ive done

i have the 50$ ebay short throw obx.

works fine for me. ive had it since i got the car back in jan 04.

btw this should be in the bolton section, not the lounge.

Ive heard of many people buying one of those and snapping the shifter on a hard 1-2 shift or even during normal driving. so it might not happen to you but if it does then you have to pay for a quality one later.

yeah i heard about breaking the cheapo's, but i needed a shifter asap, i broke the stock one trying to thread the shaft so i could make a ghetto short throw. i threaded the stocker all the way till it got to the hollow part and just snapped off.

why did you not just do the 20$ short throw?

all kinds of write ups...
drill 3 holes, 2 on the shifter body to run your new stops, the other under the hood to reposition the shift cable...

look on Vfaq... under trans...
and it uses the stock shifter...

yea ^^ thanks guys i just htought since how good my $10 CAI intake was that this might be the same usefull quality at low cost but i guess not. i only wanted to get a cheap one b\c im planning on selling my gs and getting a gst or gsx :dsm: :thumb: so i guess ill get a B&M and just swap the old stock one back in when i sell my car :)

So let me get this straight- a short shifter only decreases the throw and not anything on the stick height?

correct....B&M all the way :thumb:
The B&M is sweet without a doubt, but shortening the height of the shifter will reduce the throw slightly. Not really what I would call a short shifter; more so a shortened shifter. I like how it better locates my hand in relation to the radio and all that. There is a noticeable improvement going the $10 route if you don't have the scratch to go all out and do it right. Plus, if you ever decide to part-out, you can throw the shortened back in and sell the B&M for some good money.

Just my 2bits.

I'm looking for a short shifter that also is shorter by maybe an inch or two. Since the B&M isn't any shorter, are there any that are? Or is B&M going to come out with something?

Also, I found this shifter on ebay that looks exactly like the B&M and is also 1 to 2 inches shorter and is $50 incl s/h. It's nickel plated billet steel. I don't see anymore of these up on ebay now though (maybe B&M sued them or something?). Does anyone have any input on them?

I'm also interested in the knockoffs -(pacesetter and obx). Defiant recommended something similar in a DIFFERENT B&M post LOL! but I never saw a conclusion as to whether the quality is up to par or not. I guess the question to him would be, "would you put one in YOUR car if you were too cheap to front the money for a B&M but still wanted a good short shifter?".

I am not sure about the shifter that NAYR747 posted, but I just installed my Megan Racing short shifter. It looks exactly like a B&M and all of the deminsions are the same. My girlfriend got this for me for christmas from ebay thinking it was a b&m becuase all she new was to look at the picture.

I have Megan Racing front and rear strut bars and a muffler from them also. All of these are great products and I believe that megan is an up and coming company. The shifter came with everything needed and went on smoothly. The actual hight of the shift nob doesn't seem any lower, but the throw is definently shorter. It has a much more precise feel. I would recomend this to anyone not wanting to pay for a B&M.

Here is a link, and if you want pics, let me know.
