Didn't read through the whole post, so not sure if this has been covered yet. Does it actually shorten the length of the shifter? I hate how tall mine is, I cut mine about an inch and it's still to high. Any pics?

If its the same as the B&M it shortens the shifter about an 1". You get most of the shortened shift action from the bottom part being longer then the stock below the pivot point.

does the stock shift knob thread to it with no problems??? Also that link is that the one u bought (i know its been asked but gotta double check LoL).

daren_p....for those bearings in the tranny...can u send me a link to what your talkin about....

I got mine off a guy on ebay, don't see his ads anymore, think his name is stftm524. This is basically what Im talking about

Their just 2 bearings that you use to replace the mushy factory ones. Mine came with 2 bearings, 4 washers & 2 cotter pins, think I paid $20. You can probably get the bearings at a skateboard shop but I don't know if their the exact same size, as they are a tight fit since you dont want them moving around. I put these in before I installed the short shifter & you could actually feel the difference.

no, no it actually won't, you only think it does

yes, yes it actually will. I guess you were sleeping in class when they talked about pivot points in grade school :p  . The closer you get to the pivot point the lesser the travel, so cutting the shifter down will make the trow shorter but not by very much. How do you think a short shifter works? Its the exact opposite of shortening the top, they lengthen the bottom part below the pivot to get more travel.

Alright, thanks for hijacking the damned thread. Shortening the shift lever gives you a smaller arc your hand has to go through, at the expense of less leverage.
A true "short shifter", as stated, changes the arc of the shifter below the fulcrum, making for a shorter shifter throw without greater effort.

Now, anyone want to take another swing at the topic?

so does anyone knwo if skateboard bearing will work or not because thats what they look like. i got tons of those damn thing lyin around in my garage if they do work.

Yes (try searching), and the thread is now closed before the off-topic tsunami hits.

there was actually a pretty decent thread about this not too long ago. Im not goin to look for it so you will have to.

I remember the wisemen staying loyal to B&M, and most others were open to trying it and had bought some. Oh, and the install apparently is a breeze. Anyway, look for the thread cause it is pretty interesting.

does it reduce shifter height as well? And ive heard with the ebay kits you cant use stock shift knob wont thread on anymore, so what have people switched over to?

I bought a ss kit from Megan Racing, and it's just beautiful. It looks pretty simular to the B&M shifter. It comes with a shift knob too.

i was wondering if anyone has installed a short throw shifter in a dsm latley and if so what did you go with. and then there is also did you like the outcome of your actions. thanks ...... :talon:

I installed an OBX short throw shifter, i think it was OBX, in a friends 97 gst last summer. I was impressed with the results. It felt solid and seemed to work well. The throw was reduced maybe 30%. But the great thing I like about short shifters on dsm's is that the shift knob isn't in the way of the radio anymore

I have heard a couple of horror stories about installing low-quality short shifters. I have been told that you can potentially harm your transmission if the shifter isn't designed the way it should be. Try looking at B&M. they have been around forever so they are doing something right! :dsm:

i hate it when i turn off the radio or hit next or some other button while shifting.. hehe

I have a B&M shifter in my car and I love it! it definately takes some getting used to but it makes a huge difference over the stocker. The one crappy thing about it is that the drink holder becomes pretty useless.

I have a B&M also and i love it. it does take some getting used to but its fun

would anyone be able to tell me if i have a short shifter or not? when i bought my eclipse it had an aftermarket shifter knob on it (a wooden ball by hurst) but the shifter itself is only about 3 inches above the center console. what is the normal height for our shifters? is it possible the last owner installed a short shifter and how would i know?

take the center console off, snap a pic of it, show us

Here's a pic I just took of my short shifter...my Momo knob is like 4 meters high so that makes it taller than it should be

thats another reason DSMs get a bad rep about reliablity.. its only as reliable as the owner makes it.. rather be safe than sorry.. and do it right the first time.. im buying the symborski kit..
