B&M and clone short shifter 2nd gen eBay Megan [Merged 3-7]

I didn't dole out the cash for the symborski shift kit, I just went to my local auto store and bought a package of washers that fit the bolts coming off of the shift plate. Pulled out the rubber bushings and stuck washers on top and under the plate.

Shifted like butter after that. Less than a $2.00 investment.

how does the ebay b&m replica work out for you guys? I think my shifter is just one of those things I would pony out the dough for and get the good sh*t. :thumb:
With most performance things I would agree, but I had a chance to compare them side to side and have now shifted with them both and imo its all in buying the name.I have an extra 75 now to spend.

you do know that is not going to work the same way. if anything that will make it worst. there is nothing in the bolt hole that fills the gap between the bolt hole in the shift plate and the bolt thats holding it down. ugggggg you cheaped out on a $35 mod? OMG

wich shifter did you get? i had the rs type from 4caroptions on ebay.it worked pretty good.hey danny take a look at jimmy's b&m so you get a idea on how it goes on.it is alittle weird how it goes on,but like gs said it doesn't take a genius to do it.i did it in about an hour.the symborski shift kit is definatly a good investment.

i got the b&m knockoff off ebay problem is i crossthreaded the nut so it wont come off BASTAGE!

so im gonna re attempt it today and put some muscle into it :p

Hope you get that nut problem fixed  I have the same one and it feels great at first but once you get to driving around for a month or two with it, it feels almost stock, I guess it's that way after any mods though cause my car feels like it's stock(but it's not)

after my mechanic told me off for a few mins we started thinking we might have to cut it off and re weld it

LOL he was like IDIOT next time just take it here

Just curious, what are the advantages of the kit. I have no problem speed shiftin' on stock so my shift is fast enough and I do like the feel of stock. Not wiseassin' just curious.

I've got the B &M short throw and I have it on 50% reduction and I would have to say this is one of the biggest improvements that can be done to this car. I get a satisfying click/thunk every time it goes into gear and it really tightened it up.

ya i was good at quick shifting too, but now you could do it the same exact speed, but move the stick half as much, with the 50% reduction like i have on

yeah its definatly better to have a short shifter. if you have the two available heres the difference.stock shifter feels like a 1994 ford ranger shifter.nothing wrong with it,just isn't sporty.then go into a porsche, very sporty feel and way quicker shifts.but where stll far from that porsche. :p

Yeah, I get what you guys are saying. I was just wondering if there was something that I was missing. Remember I come from a time when we had the big long rod throws for shifting (mustangs, GTO and yes the Bug). These you had to change the shifter. With the DSM it's like using an arcade shifter compared to these. :p

Hahahaha! LOL. Old enough to know better than to take the challenge of a 15 sec na! But apparently not old enough to resist.

BTW, I ran mustangs and Goats when they were classics, not when they came out. ;)

It did not make it "worst". The washers were the size of the bolt, and bolted down with some good torque the plate didn't move.

if you looked at your shift plate, you will notice that the holes where the old bushings were are fairly big, probably like the size of a quarter(rough guestimate). now, the soft stock rubber bushings sit between the bolts that hold the plate down, and the edges of the big holes that surround the bolts. the goal is to replace those, that connection between the throttle plate and the throttle plate bolts, with a firm hard material, to give you a firm crisp shift, and to get rid of the mushy stock bushings. look at the picture below, specifically the bottom 4 bushings. see the raised section in the middle? that is what goes between the edge of the shift plate and the shift plate bolts. its what holds the shift plate in place. regular washers are not going to have this. it may work now just because you torqued the hell out of it, but it will eventually slip.

So you fill the large holes with washers, and sandwich them with larger ones. It ain't the Space Shuttle you're working on.

i guess you could, but he didnt do that, and i dont understand why were arguing about how to do a $35 mod cheaper!

Because most DSMers are cheap bastards, and I am one of them. 35.00 doesn't sound like a lot of money but when you add up a whole bunch of 35.00 things you get a huge number after a while.

Also, why should I pay someone 35 bucks for something that took about 3.00 in material and a half hour to make, when I can do it for myself. Yeah it may not be machined but it works just the same

Can you post a link to the one you bought? There are lots of them on eBay...with a $100 spread in price.

I hope you don't get the problems I have heard from those eBay knockoffs.

I haven't heard anything about about the ebay knockoffs because they are EXACTLY the same, It is a solid piece of metal there isnt anything that can break on it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MINE :thumb: ! MAKE SURE YOU USE LOCKTITE mine came loose a few days after I put it on but once you get that locktite on good is B-E-A-UTIFUL. Short shifter, shifter bushings is my favorite mod so far. :thumb:
