Sorry man, they don't make 89-90 short throws, other than stock cut and welded ones( you gotta be carefull and read the fine pring because piolet racing sells one for our cars but down the bottom a ways it says "*cut and welded stock shifter" but if you find one PM Me or if any of you found one for the 89-90 cars PM me :D

Is there a VFAQ on a DIY short shifter for the 90 cars?

i actually got a free "short shifter" thrown in with some tranny stuff i bought off ebay, and it's IDENTICAL to the oem one, except it's exactly 1" shorter. it's the exact same though, and it's really wierd. i got it for free, and it's just 1", so i'm not complaining

Ok I got the short shifter off of ebay that is a B+M clone:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7935615251&category=33736

It came with everything I needed except instructions off of RRE for the B+M SS which I didn't even need because it was a matter of one nut, some washers, and a cotter pin to remove the stocker. I just read the instructions to see where the nylon washers went. Anyways I put it on the 50% reduction and it is a pretty short throw, the only thing I noticed is that the shifter got a little stiff going through the gears (takes some effort to move it). I think it might just be the pivot needing to get worn in or something but we'll see. It seems like it's been getting smoother since I installed it.

Also it came with the shift knob pictured with it although I used my Greddy CW that fits well. However I gave the other knob to my bro for his VR-4 and it didn't fit...but my Greddy CW fits on his car so who knows. But overall I like it so far, I just hope that it gets a little smoother overtime. Oh yeah it came packaged with a blue cardboard backing with a hard plastic mold stapled to the cardboard which is just like the B+M one??? I think it was a good buy for $50 shipped.

I just installed this off of ebay:

I did everything snug, didn't use any Loc-tite but the purple pivot I think is causing it to require more force to move the shifter??? I went on dsmreviews and everyone else had noticed extra effort to change gears. Maybe it has to do with the the purple piece...or is there something I should try adjusting, however I do have the underhood bushings and shifter plate bushings, also Syncromesh fluid.

Let me tell you about the cheap one since I had both.

1. The cheap one had more play than a 2 dollar hooker.
2. Shifting into third I broke one of the welds and the shifter snapped clean in half.

I know have the B&M and am ashamed I wasted the money on the cheap one.

I will sell you my re-welded cheap one (stronger than when it was made) for only 40 plus shipping and you can see how shitty it is.

do u have the one that look like this:

It sure looks like the exact B&M pattern, and the B&M is pure silk. There's really not much there to screw up. Now, if we can get them to make them to fit 1Gs, they'd really be onto something.

If I were to install it again, it would only take me about 10min granted the e-clip isn't a PITA to get on. I spent about 30min trying to push that e-clip on with my thumb to keep the lower shift cable on...don't know why they just didn't drill a hole so you can use the cotter pin. I tried using pliers to open it up but it was too small to really do anything with, so I just put it on the groove, and got the handle of a screwdriver and just kinda hammered it in.

i would imagine one difference between the B&M and the ebay is that according to RRE (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/ecldrivetrain.htm) the B&M uses a roller bearing on the pivot to reduce freeplay. i don't know if the ebay version would use one, being so cheap- but i'll know soon enough as i ordered one last night. if it DOES need a bearing there, go to any hobby shop and look around at the plethora of bearings available for R/C cars. i guarantee they'll have some that could be made to work with it for under $15.

i'll post some pics when i get mine in.

While I was installing the shifter I looked into the top hole of the pivot, it wasn't hollow, the sides had teeth along it. Mine doesn't seem to have play though.

i have the kit that came with the free shift knob, identical to the BM shifter.
i installed it after fiddling with the clip for good 20minutes. its a PITA in the cold.
it was hard to shift at first, needed to put in some effort. but now it shifts alot better as it has worn in. there is also a bearing in the purple pivot diaphram.

i give it a thumbs up.

shift knob is junk though. doesn't fit on a 1g shifter, tried too. but i'm sure you can easily tap the treads bigger.

That e-clip sucked....that's the only problem I ran into during installation.

I want a short shifter and i have heard to many horror stories about ebay specials breaking. My questions are, Does the B&M come with everything needed? And how hard is it to install?

Mine came with every thing needed, and it was very easy to install. The instructions were a little vague, but it only took about 30 min to install. I would definitely reccomend it :thumb:

I 2nd everyone else's statements, mine took about 30 minutes or so on my first time ever doing something like that..hardest part is honestly taking out the center console  ..LOL...but it is very simple and made a BIG difference in terms of the way shifting felt/feels. I also did 50% and don't regret not doing 35% AT ALL!!! Enjoy. :thumb:

Mine took me about an hour being super super careful, and i set it to 50% and love everything about it shifts feel much better all around, got mine off ebay.

Not sure about the interchangableness between GSX/GST-RS/GS. I definately love mine, it's a world of difference over the stock shifter. Everything is complete. I changed all mine from the hood bushings to shifter plate bushings, was @ 35% but now at 50%, and I'm very happy with this setup.
