the only problem you will have when installing an evo 8 shift knob is that the boot will not meet up with the knob. an easy fix for this is take a zip tie and place it where you think the best height to keep the boot at is on the shifter itself then place the boot over it and screw the knob down and it looks perfect. and yes the knobs are very expensive. luckily i scored one for free from my friend when he bought a new momo knob for his evo 8 :D
 
i got my shifter for $100 shipped i also added the shifter base bushings and the under hood bushings so everything is nice and tight :thumb: even my wife drives the car and she likes the sharpness and how short the throws are less work to shift :D
 
does a short shifter make your car any faster?? and also how do you tell if you have one becuse mine is really short but I've seen lots of cars with this short so I'm not sure
 
A short shifter does not make your car faster. The theory is that it makes you faster; with a shorter throw, you should be able to get from gear to gear quicker. That balances with the fact that when you just hack down the height of the shift lever, you also increase the effort needed to shift from gear to gear; you lose leverage because the pivot point on the lever remains in the same place. This can be overcome somewhat with a heavier shift knob.

A short shifter like the B&M for 2g DSMs shortens the throw without increasing effort, which is a win-win; it does this by relocating the pivot point so that effort remains the same, but the distance needed to travel is reduced (and, as it turns out, it can be adjusted to two different settings, depending on your tastes). The downside? The knob still sits at stock, or slightly below stock, height, meaning bling-bling bumpty boyz won't have dat wicked low knob, yo. ;)

Hey everyone just wanted to give my 2cents. I just installed the symborsky shift kit, and a B&M short shifter. WOW HOLY SH!T. Talk about night and day. I really cant say enough about how much better it makes my car feel. I really recomend doing this upgrade. Its a rather cheap upgrade, and it feels so much nicer. :thumb: :thumb:
 
For value in difference, the B&M 2G shifter may be the cheapest expensive accessory in the DSM world.

Now, gitcha some of that Pennzoil Synchromesh, and prepare for yet another leap.
 
B&M shifter cheap?! hellzzz no , worth it ? dont know yet . Cars has been down but i put it in anyway while it was sitting i should know very soon. I also have the kit and that dd make shifting better IMO.
 
Jerry, did you install the solid underhood bushing replacements from MachV? I did that yesterday, and it brought the shifter feel up another notch.

yea, i put in the shifter and the shifter kit. I really pleased with it. Really feels like the car shifts itself. I love it

have you put yours in yet?
 
Not the symborski ones for the shifter plate, the ones for the shifter linkages. You did those as well?

I decided to hold off on the B@M so I can afford racegas for a few more track nights.

B&M is expensive but is without a doubt worth every penny. After installing mine, I would never trust another company.

What short shifter kit should I get for my 1G? Also... should i get the plastic bushings swapped out to have a better feel on the shifts?

Sorry man, they don't make 89-90 short throws, other than stock cut and welded ones( you gotta be carefull and read the fine pring because piolet racing sells one for our cars but down the bottom a ways it says "*cut and welded stock shifter" but if you find one PM Me or if any of you found one for the 89-90 cars PM me :D
 
can someone om me or send me a link to that pilot motorsports 1g shifter. or a 1g shifter for that fact. 1g fwd shifter if it makes a difference

pretty short although not a "true short shifter" . replacing the horsecock with the 2g knob made a huge difference.
