axle sticking out of differential

My rear differential just started to randomly leak about a week ago. So i look at it and it seems that my left axle is sticking out about 2 inches from the rear diff. I couldn't fix it so i temporarily sealed it off. Any ideas what could possibly be going on? and would it be cheaper to just get a used rear diff and slap it on?

Sounds like the sir clip is broke or missing on the axle. The clip holds the axle in the diff. I would pull axle out to see if it's missing or not. If it is try to find another one or change axle. I would also change the axle seals on the diff ### they are probably shot.

Isn't the circlip by the wheel hub? but your saying there's probably nothing wrong with my differential, right?

No the circlip is on diff side only thing that holds axle into it. On hub side is a castle nut with cotter pin. I don't know if your diffs ok or not, but you need to pull axle to see what's going on. It's also possible you could have damaged splines in the diff or axle causing this axle to not hold.
