Axle poping out.

I have a 97 gs-t that I recently installed a quaife LSD in. When I got the LSD installed I also got the second syncro and clutch replaced. So here's where the problem appears. I was driving the car yesturday for the first time since I got the LSD and the passenger side axle just popped out. I tried to simply put it back in place but nothing it won't fit or stay in.

Now I brought the car to a different mechanic and he measured everything checked for the c clip and everything is the right size and the c clip is there, but the axle doesn't want to stat in as if it was too short. I ordered a new axle just to see if it fits but If it doesn't what else can I check for? Did the other mechanic mess up?

Is it a factory axle or a remanufacturerd axle that keeps popping out?

I've come across re-mans that varied a great deal in length, so it is possible that the axle could be too short of it's not OEM. If the length is correct, then try replacing the c-clip. I've come across it before where the c-clip seems to lose some of it's diameter and if it doesn't compress much when being installed, it won't hold the axle cup in the tranny very well. You can buy replacement c-clips at parts stores that sell replacement cv shafts.

Everything is oem on the axle side of things. Maybe since it popped out and I drove on it it busted up the c clip?

I'd try replacing the clip if I were you. A good clip will always hold the axle in tightly.

So I just got back from the garage. Here's where it gets fun. Upon further inspection my mechanic and I noticed that the axle the LSD get installed was not an abs!! So he switched my axles! Can anyone confirm why he would do this? And when we put the axle in it doesn't want to go in all the way.

Ok here's a brief update. The abs axle came in and it clearly doesn't fit . I'm runing out of ideas. The axle that's in there now doesn't want to go in all the way. Maybe the LSD wasn't for a fwd? Is there a difference in the awd and fwd axles and LSD?

The only difference between ABS and non-ABS is that the outside cups of the ABS axles also have a ring gear. There's no difference in length, spline, etc... My non-ABS car runs ABS axles up front with no issues.

If you axles were swapped out, find out where they came from. It would also be worth measuring their length and comparing them to the factory lengths.

Your factory axles should work with that LSD, ABS or not. I never had to change mine to run the Quaife.

What's the scenario if I put an awd LSD in a fwd tranny? Would it make it that the axle wouldn't fit all the way in? What are the differences between the 2.

I'm 99% sure the drivers side axle is the same between FWD and AWD. I know for sure the drivers side is different though. AWD uses a rigid halfshaft, so it's a 2-piece design.

As far as I know, yes. There isn't a difference in the axles between LSD and non-LSD and there ins't a difference between the front differentials between FWD and AWD.


If it's popping out from a fully installed state, it's either because the axle is too short, or the c-clip is worn out. Those are about the only two reason it will ever happen.

So to fix the axle issue . For some reason it didn't even want to go in all the way.
My other mechanic filed down the tip of the axle and cleaned it up and now it fits perfectly.

The other mechanic who originally installed the LSD probably switched out my axle for some odd reason and really forced the new one into place . I know this for a fact cause the axle in question is now a non abs axle and my driver side one is abs....
