AWD to RWD thread, official [Merged 10-7]

So me and my buddy picked up an EXTREMLY abused 91AWD from my buddys tow yard. car has no title and EVERYTHING on the car needs major TLC. it really isn't worth gettin it back on the street. so we got a hold of a motor, tranny, wheels etc. now we took the tranny and welded the center diff. now since we have equil torque to front and rear we built some front axle plugs that still spin and took the outer CV nuckle and put it on the spindle with the castle nuts so the front end is pretty tight again. we are still getting motor work done but has anybody ever tried this. it will still technically be AWD but no power will reach the ground in the front, only rear. we have many sanctioned drift events here and we were thinkin about going drifting in a DSM. what do you think. we don't know if it is gonna work but we were really bored, had a free shell, lots of time, and extra parts like nobodys business LOL.

thought it might have been an AWD but not after i saw the rear tires smoking and the fronts not. weird. i'd like to do this, but not with my car LOL

Steps to RWD:

1) Get a lot of money or sponsors
2) visit: https://secure.buschurracing.com/ca...22_98&osCsid=6631303afaa9e9cbb5ca59dae60ddbcf
3) Drift

Buscher racing already has a RWD conversion. You'll want to mount the engine Like in a normal RWD car, use GM Tranny. Its expensive, but if you can get it done :thumb: There's a lot of fabrication involved, you may want to look up Shepards 6 second RWD eclipse.

BTW if you keep it RWD the way it is you're just going to be fixing things all the time.

I seen that last video a long time ago. The guys rear diff was goin out so he modded his tranny like you are. The guy said that with a ###### up rear diff he got a couple of weeks of fun out of it before it let go.

As far as doin it for a daily, I wouldn't do it, you will have more down time then anything. If you did it right like Buscher, that might be a fun daily if you got deep pockets!

I'm looking to swap a 6 bolt into a 89 dakota...bringing a sleeper concept to a whole new meaning...I've seen the pics of a 4g63 in an rx7, but I couldnt fine out which tranny they used to make for a rear wheel drive application. If any one has any suggestions on the fitment of a tranny, or any idea or tips I would appreciate it.
Thanks

wow for some reason this thread showed up in my youtube video as a linked video for this thread, yet I dont see it here. haha. I had lots of fun with my RWD 2g awd. Just wish it had an LSD. Unfortunately its VERY VERY VERY VERY dangerous.... so beware!

I did however drive it for 5,000~ miles like this. Just for whatever reason one day I was driving it where it had just previously been raining a little bit before I was on that road doing 65mph in a 70mph and started to accelerate and lost control and crashed...

Note I put a LOOOOT of abuse on those rear axles and they never so much as even flinched. I dyno'd 400whp on that rwd setup too. :) Hell one guy on the link forums I believe dyno'd 700whp on his rwd setup but he was using a 1g w/ a LSD.

:) So did the OP ever do this?

I already searched the forums here and couldn't find anything, so here goes. Would it be possible to remove the front transaxles to make my awd gsx a rwd gsx? And by would it be possible I mean would it work. I know thats what they did for Tokyo drift to get that evo to break loose.

Come on somebody has to have some input on this, even if you don't answer the question at least point me in the right direction. I though the biggest issue would be the differential.

His name is Brent Rau look him up supposebly that's the only way to do it is by turning the motor and getting the GM tranny kit because the transfer case won't. Hold up. But if you want to leave the intermidiate shaft in the left side and take the right axle apart and put only the part that goes in the tranny.
Note I am not guaranteeing this will work so if you do it and somethings brake I'm not paying for what ever it is

Get a solid center differential and take off the front shafts. It has been done but the rear diff doesn't like to take all of the power. You would want a 4 bolt rear at least...

Just go buy a starion/conquest and swap a 4g63 from a DSM into it :thumb:

Well, if you do just pull the front half shafts, find an old pair that you could use the yokes out of to fill the holes left by taking them out. but don't forget a welded center diff or "spool" style center diff is going to be a must for this. But like others have said, don't plan on puting a ton of power down to just that rear diff, it WILL BREAK. Brent runs the motor turned sideways ( or front to back) and a real rear wheel drive tranny with a ford 9 inch rear end, but boy is his car fast. I'd love to convert to RWD because almost every car i've owned before this one was RWD and i sooo miss being able to kick it out in intersections and turns... back before it was popular and they named it drifting that is LOL

That's my dream project (unless i were rich that is, then we'd be talking porsche) but i've always loved conquests ( had one for a month ) and i'd love to have one all decked out, 4g63, borg warner t-56 tranny and a pimped out pain job and set of wheels :D

have a look at my homemade oil pan.

good stuff!
what do you plan on using for a transmission?
RX-7 Tranny with B2600 bellhousing? GM Auto tranny with boucher adapter plate? or something else?

also what is it going in?

this will be going in my 1990 laser FWD. I am going to hack it up, i am sick of all the problems im having with it.
I will be using a toyota r154 out of an MK3 turbo supra.

I have an rx7 solid rear axle with LSD that i will mount up later. This oil pan was the first thing i had to change, now I have to figure out someyhing for the front suspension, not going to tear apart the rear until i have that done. I have already straightened the steering colum.

we will see how it goes...

alot,
calculated the sump volume, the dropped down area...its 496 cubic inches. Google tells me that is about 8.6 quarts, or 8 liters.

Its sitting in my kitchen and its full of water. Going to let it sit over night and see if there is any leeks.

another thing that is intresting...for those RWD 4g63 folks...
flipping the turbo around so it faces forward. The compressor outlet would point right to the exhaust manifold. Not exactly what I want. Also the pressurized oil feed and oil drain would be at a not so optimal angle. Knowing that the turbine housing isint going to move I just took the easy way out and clocked the center section and compressor housing about 20-25 degrees. This is easy for anyone to do that has a gas torch.

This is the dowel pin that aligns the housings, its press fit. I could not pull it out with vice grips, but a little heat around it and she slid right out. Thats was the easy part.

If you clock the housing to better suit your needs then your wastegate actuator wont even line up. So i just cut it in half. Mind you i did all the mock up work on my old 14b and its actuator. I wasent shure if any of this was going to work.

Hahaha, thats an EXPENSIVE oil change. :p
