I'm curious about this. I'm about to order 8 or 9 timing-belt-change related items from my local dealer.

I e-mailed the guy at the dealership (whom I always deal with) an Excel file with all my part numbers.

When he got back to me, it was with a price of $152.00 for a water pump.

That, to me, seemed to be a bit steep; so I called AutoZone.

AutoZone has one for $52.00.

I'm curious as to whether or not anybody has anything good/bad to say about using an AutoZone water pump?

That part would be my first AutoZone part, everything else has been Mitsu OEM from the dealer.

I guess, when I think about it, saving the $100 isn't my only concern. I'm concerned about using an AutoZone water pump. But if it's rock solid, then I'll go with it.

Sorry for rambling, and thanks for any help!

Ive always ran Autozone waterpumps and mine and other peoples cars, not just DSMs either...

And have yet to have a problem, plus they come with warranty so if it does fail, i can always get it replaced... cant do that with OEM waterpumps ;)

I've worked at Autozone for 2 years now and I gotta say 99.9% of our stuff is garbage. I usually go across the street to Advance Auto for more critical parts like these but I do have to say that i've never seen anyone come back with a broken Duralast water pump. Valucrafts are a different story...

I don't know what kind of luck others have had but it seems that every time I put something from either Advanced or Auto Zone on either of my daughters cars I end up having to replace it with a Mitsubishi part. Maybe just my luck. Hehe. I say spend the little extra and rest assured you got quality stuff.

almost 3 years on my water pump now from autozone and still runs like a champ and I would consider my car highly modified.

I run a topline water pump... Have since 2003. For those "OEM is best" guys... it's a f'ing pump.... it's not complicated. The only way these things fail is that the seals break down or the impeller shaft/blades break or the bearings get chewed up. If you are too ignorant to make sure your car does not overheat you should not be driving a DSM. Common signs your water pump is on it's way out... The seals start leaking... That's why when you look at the bottom of the pump there is what's called a "weep hole" this will start leaking coolant once the seal goes bad. The only failure I've had with an aftermarket pump wasn't really the pump at all.. It was the O-ring that goes to the water pipe behind the turbo. Guess what.? I got a brand new pump since I considered that a failure and the parts store agreed.

I always tell the oem only guys, "if oem was the best, why don't we all drive bone stock cars?" I use only parts store water pumps in my car. The reason, i run water only because i track all of my cars. No coolant, which has lube, and seal conditioners in it. My autozone pumps still last a long time. Dsm's have been around long enough to know what has to be high dollar.

any word on the GMB waterpumps sold on ebay? i saw a buddy put one in is car a while back, and it said "gmb japan" on it....:hmm:($50 shipped) he hasnt had a problem with it almost a year later. anybody use this pump on a turbo dsm?

For the first timing belt change (around 55K miles) I bought a GMB water pump and had a shop install it. It worked fine until I changed the timing belt and everything else again at around 106K miles.

I don't fool with that Auto Zone JUNK!! but I will go to Advanced Auto.. I have never had a part from Advanced fail on me.. I will always stick with Advanced.:thumb:

ALWAYS: Stay The F%&*^ Away from orielys!

True story...
i walk into oriely's to order a set of stock oem fog lights for my eclipse... they order them...
4 days later they come in... 2003 Civic STI fog lights!?!? WTF?!?! :banghead: No thank you! You can't even order the right freaking light? What good are you? i would hate to see what honda part you would have ordered me if i needed something important like a water pump or a timing belt or something.

been a while since my last post in here, but i ended up buying the GMB water pump a while back. and must say... $35 well spent (brand new! cant be beat!!) haven't had a problem since! " gmb japan" ftw!

orielys sucks dick, they sold my friend the wrong drill bit for a heli coil kit that he used on his powder coated intake mani. so mani was junk nd they almost werent gonna refund him.

I'll be using the az pump to, whats better new or remanned?

Now guys. While YES, i am an employee of checker (oreillys, chucks, kragen, etc) I dont cheerlead them. I agree some of the stuff i sell is shit, but you cant blame the company for retarded employees. I have one of our pumps in my DSM and its doing perfect. Bear in mind, most of the parts we sell are backed with a LIFETIME warranty, so in the event that something should fail, any checker anywhere will take care of you. usually your better off spending the extra money, getting the new pump, with a lifetime warranty. Now guys, dont bother replying and telling me what an idiot i am, everyone has their opinion, and i simply dont want to see everyone bicker like childen over their favorite parts stores. I go to the place i get the best parts, for the best deal. Sometimes its checker, sometimes its napa, carquest, etc. I do know that within a 1000 mile radius of us, we have put every autozone except one out of buisness. Sad to see the jobs go, but hey, cant argue with the results can you?

So far the only thing i have been able to get at oriellys is...

it was the only place i could find a Chiltons... YES, i now have a chiltons along side my trusty haynes manuel.

besides that... i don't know about any of your orielly stores... but the one we have is predominately honda. want a air filter for your ford f150? go to autozone they have it in stock. want a fuse for your dsm? you might find one but better luck at advance auto parts. want some fog lights for your 2G dsm? autozone can order them for like $85 buck for one side (bulb and bezel not included)... better than oriellys did for me... so i went on ebay and ordered them for 60 bucks for both :D

I have an Autozone water pump on my car and I have a nice little pudcle of coolant under the driver's side of the engine everyday. It started leaking about 20K after I put it on. I'm going to use that as an excuse to 6 bolt swap my car...:D

I know old thread but I'm only wondering about something...

My question is that my almost new (bought spring"ish" 2012 and installed it, motor died 2 days later) advanced auto water pump look completely different on the fins. I know the stock water pump has fins like the photo above. Does anyone else have fins like the one I have here? I'm debating on usuing this style pump on my new built motor because its brand new. I read the thread but still don't know which I'm leaning yet. Thanks

Water pumps are a pain in the ass to change I would go an oem one just for peace of mind not having to change it again for a good couple of years. Not to mention, looks like that design would flow more than the other.

Bought a gates with a closed fin design. It's just as efficient. No problems so far and its been around 10k on the current. Both will do the job just fine. Call me anal, but I do the pump every belt change on all my cars. Have yet to have an aftermarket pump fail on me in 7 years. I've almost exclusively bought Gates though. Went with a GMB a while back. Still great quality.
