I had a 1990 5 speed parts car, but am doing the auto to 5 speed swap to my daily driver 1991 eagle talon. HELP!! I got the flywheel and everything put together in the engine bay. PROBLEM: key does not turn the starter. The motor cranks and runs off a starter jumper but I need everything to work from key.. Has anyone successfully done this swap to a 1G 4g63 nonturbo before? Any hints tips or tricks would be appreciated.
I want to drive my rebuilt motor already

really easy man! I've done this few years back. Just take the plug that goes to the auto trans and plug together the wires that goes to the starter ( auto trans cars only start in Park and Neutral)

the two wires are black with yellow stripe if I remember well but i'm not 100% sure.

Thanks for the info man! I wish you had photos because I still don't know what to do. I'm not one to cut wires and try things, when someone's done this in the past DSM world.

You're looking for a 12-pin rectangular connector (2 rows of 6 pins each) in the '91 automatic engine harness that would have gone to the automatic transmission's inhibitor switch. Pins 8 and 9 for a 1991 model are the wires that need to be connected together; they will be the same size black with yellow wires and will obviously be positioned right next to each other in the connector.

So I cut wires 8 and 9 at the connector and solder them together right there by the connector I took them out from? I heard I had to add a wire or something but I'm trusting your word, and appreciate it too much man. Cars been out for a year with a rebuilt motor!

Are the pins or wires you are speaking of, in the middle of this pic? Parallel prongs. Black wires with yellow stripes? Correct me if I'm mistaken. Thanks once again, you're a dsm lifesaver!

This image has the schematic for reference of the inhibitor switch connector. The black and yellow wires you're looking for are between a Red wire with a blue stripe, on the corner of the connector, and a red wire that's 4 wires in. From your picture it should be on the other side of that connector. Those two black and yellow wires are the ones you'll need to connect.

So you're saying there's more than just soldering the 2 black wires with yellow stripe? I'm a little confused

Now I look at the back and realize there are 3 black wires with yellow stripe. Now I'm not sure which ones you speak of as prongs 8 and 9. Prong 1 should be the one with no wire?? Please help

Aaahhhhhhh! I believe I found what you were talking about. The 2 thicker black wires with yellow stripe I solder together? I see the red wire with blue stripe and then both black wires as explained, an then the red wire like you were talking about. Hopefully now we're all on the same page now

Don't make it difficult. ;)

Pin 12 is the one without a wire. You can verify this by looking at the diagram posted by fwbt -- there is no "12" leaving the box that represents the inhibitor switch.

UPDATE: car starts right up, nice n easy but idles a little under 3k sometimes. But chills at 2200. Does any body have any ideas or 2 cents to put in on the situation?

Is your base timing set?

Have you adjusted the biss screw to help with the idle?

Have you checked your coolant? Low coolant could cause an issuer with the fiav not opening or closing properly(would have to be REALLY low for this)

The timing was set after the rebuild of the motor. Ran good as auto but trans was getting tired. I've adjusted the coolant levels but reservoir is a little over full. Not to mention losing a little coolant after cleaning throttle body. I've only taken off and put back on was the CAS and ISC and TB but I don't see why it's acting up. What's the biss screw? The idle screw on the throttle body? I've never touched it since 2009 except use compressed air on the top cus I couldn't see if it was a screw or not back in 2011. HAHA that being said, both ECUs work but for some reason check engine came on with all new electricals
