i just got a 91 awd tsi, i has driving it and it was shifting fine, then when i was about to get home it wouldnt go into first, it stalled and shut off, i put it back into first and it died when i took my foot of the clutch not that i stalled it, it seems like its stuck in first and wont roll backward when it looks like like its in nuetral, the clucth pedal goes all the way to the floor is it the clutch or the tranny

From what I could translate- your clutch is not disengaging? When you hold the clutch to the floor and put it in gear any lift of the clutch pedal makes it stall?

An easy test to check disengagment is to park on a flat spot, put the car in first gear and WHILE HOLDING THE CLUTCH IN, slowly rev the engine and hold its rpms somewhere around 5000. If the car creeps forward, your clutch isn't disengaging. Me personally, would suspect a failing clutch master cylinder or slave.

i can start the car as long as i have the clutch pedal in, but when i take my foot off the pedal it dies, it moves alittle but not a big jerk like stalling it would do,

More than likely a bearing related issue in the trans, probably a roller bearing.

If it was clutch related, in neutral, stalling wouldn't have anything to do with it (as much as I can think at 4am)

The input shaft is the only thing that's really moving when in neutral, clutch out.

Unless of course your clutch is hanging up on something.

Check your shifter cables, incase it's causing your trans to stay in gear, but it really sounds like a bearing issue.

i think its stuck it thirs gear, if it were in nuetral the car wouldnt die when i take my foot off the clutch. i think it might have stuck in third because i can star the car in 1st or 2nd and drive away before it started happining. it has to be stuck in a higher gear to not let me drive maybe 3rd or 4thgear. well its being towed to the shop now and the guy said it could possably be a throwout bearing? does that sound right?

Gofer, a bad hydraulic system wouldn't cause the car to stall in neutral, broken shift forks, or bad bearings will though.

No, it doesn't sound like the throw out bearing, you'd be able to put the car in Neutral and start it and let out the clutch and you'd be fine, the TOB is only used when you DISengage the clutch, not when you're engaging it.

Bearings/linkage/or shift fork.

Bad TOBs usually make a HELLISH noise when they're failing. It COULD be clutch related (not hyrdraulic) but the physical clutch components, however I highly doubt this.

Pull it apart, and let us know what you find. Check the play in the input shaft, and spin it and see if it makes any weird noises.

Trust me.

just got the diagnosis from the shop it was a broken shift fork holding it in 2 gears,a broken syncro.
