I am replacing the head gasket in my 1999 eclipse gsx and I was wondering if I should put arp head studs in there also. And if yes then why what makes them better than stock. And also what's a good head gasket to buy.:hmm: any advice would help thanks guys

oem composite head gasket is unbeatable for the price vs quality and for the head studs, in a 7 bolt like yours you have to change the studs anyway but for your power level stock ones will do the job just right.

Comotec hg 85$@stm

Cometic is MLS and should only be used if both head and block have fresh mirror smooth HG surfaces, also not needed is under 600HP and 35 psi

Fel-pro 9627 PT appox $40 composite HG is a good choice it should also be locally available

The stock studs are not reusable like arps. Also if you plan on running 23+ psi arps are recommended. There much stronger than stock I guess is the answer your looking for.

True, ARP Head stud can be reused with in reason. They are not as prone to stretch as the factory TTY 11 mm head bolts

Here again, that is for the 12mm head studs for a 6 bolt

ARP Kit number 207-4201

the 7 bolt with 11mm head studs is
25/50/80

ARP Kit 207-4203

And also there is a certain torque specs for the bolts right

Factory style head bolts torque

step 1 58 ft/lbs
step 2 loosen all bolts
step 3 15 ft/lbs
step 4 90*
Step 5 90*

This is pulled from the Fel-pro torque table guide for 2004

The FSM may differ.

No that is a main stud kit.

ARP 207-4203

Click on the marketplace tab, and check with some of the supporting vendors.

The price will be about the same with them as ebay, and you just may get it faster.

No those are for the main caps not your head you need arp part number 207-4201 or 207-4701 I JUST LOOKED IN THE ARP CATALOG AND THESE ARE WHAT I FOUND FOR YOUR 94-07 M11 HEAD STUDS

IDK what catalog you are looking in, but that is the wrong info, 207-4201 is for a 6 bolt with 12mm studs.

I went to my parts shelf, and pulled a new set of ARP head studs for a 2g/7 bolt with 11mm studs

ARP Part number 207-4203

It is even marked for a 1994 up and 11mm

Why is every dsmer so damn cheap when it comes to stuff like this. OEM MLS . I have worked on these cars for 15 years and everyone that I did a head gasket job on had the oem composite. They will blow out when you run boost and no one who owns these cars just drives them like grandma's. They get a MBC and crank up the boost.

Every evo and dsm I have built for people and tuned ran a oem MLS head gasket with arps and no problems. as long as you deck the head so it perfectly flat and do the tq specs correctly you will have problem free

<---- Mitsu Composite gasket still handling 35psi from a 60mm Holset H1E, 18° peak timing, and more knock/detonation than I care to admit. Actually, the ONLY head gasket I've ever blown out was a Cometic MLS. It didn't even seal long enough to break in the engine and both surfaces were meticulously prepped.

Personally, I'll O-ring the block before I waste another $100 on over-hyped MLS junk.

Well for starters, A failed head gasket is not the cause of a problem, but the result of a problem.

The composite HG, both the OE and Felpro have gone over 500hp and 30lbs. Yes the tune has alot to do with that.

I will also agree that a MLS HG, OE, Felpro, Cometic do have there place in a build. But on a sub 400hp build, they are not needed.

Glad you have had such good success with the OE MLS.

Like you said, the surface has to be flat, that goes for any gasket to hold. But with what I have seen come from some machine shops for a surface finish, I have doubts that composite would seal for any amount of time, let alone a MLS with 2 cans of copper spray.

I have a machine shop in my town that can deck a surface on anything and comes out awesome. Guess maybe that's why I have had success with the oem mls. My opinion on the oe composite one is just from what Ive seen and stories the owns have told me. If you can hold 30 psi with it then awesome. we all have our own way of doing things . As long as the end result is the same then cool.

Have you guys seen or heard of the 2 lay copper with the o ring that's sandwiched in the middle?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but for the ARP studs do you loosen all the nuts after each time (i.e. torque all to 25, loosen all, torque all to 50, loosen all, torque all to 80) or just torque in sequence (i.e. torque all to 25, torque all to 50, torque all to 80)? Thanks!
