the dowel pins are in opposite direction but in the book the dowel pins are both facing upward. the head is new not the original head for this motor what do i do?

Well idk but I have the gears off my one of my 4g63s engines right hear in front of me and there is clearly two marks on the exhaust gear. They are directly across from each other. Same goes for the exhaust gear that is on my dd as well. Just trying to help out.

oooooh i didnt know each gear had 2 marks, i dont know if these gears have 2 marks also. the shop is closed but i'll have to check in the morning so im trying to get as much info from now

if you can take a close up pic for me i'll appreciate it ( stock 7 bolt 4g63 cam gear)

i dont think my gears have a second notch the previous owner sprayed them! when the dowel pin is upwards on the exhaust cam gear in the 9'oclock position can i just use a straight edge and line up the timing marks from the exhaust cam gear straight across to the intake cam gear then put the timing belt on????

No not both gears with two marks. I said just the exhaust gear has two marks the intake cam gear only has one mark. And yes its a seven bolt 4g63.Pictures from Sprint: View Message

still but that's the biggest clue i got, i thought the exhaust cam gear only had 1 mark didnt know it had 2 b.c the previous owner sprayed the cam gear & im looking at this pic a million times and watching the exhaust cam turn in my head and im saying to myself no matter what i do it will always land in the same spot but since now i know it has 2 marks that just basically solved all my problems. i just need to know if i can use a straight edge from from 1 mark from the exhaust cam gear to the intake cam gear

it's a 95 eclipse gs-t

Just make sure the dowels are up.

what year is the car??

I have no idea why your car has these EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts (my car has these on both cams EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts)
It looks like your intake cam gear only has one mark. The exhaust has two. leave the intake cam alone and flip the Exhaust cam 180*.

The stock intake gear for a 2.0 only has one mark as well. Only difference I can see in the gear in my hand and the gear in the link is mine says D20 instead of D24. Maybe the flip side has a difference but no difference in the front. And since his exhaust gear says D20 I don't think his intake gear is a D24. But I could be wrong pic doesn't show. To OP does as told rotate pistons till are are in the middle, rotate exhaust gear 180 degrees, reinstall timing belt, rotate crank 360 degrees bring the cam marks back together where they face each other, check the crank mark and if its on then your good:thumb:. Though like someone said you will most likely have to set one gear alil bit off in order to install timing belt. That's why you rotate crank by hand 360 degrees to mark sure after a full rotation that all marks come back to exactly where they should be.

Thanks im really glad you told me you saw 2 marks on your exhaust side so now everything makes sense. and the reason why my intake gear says d24 is b.c my intake cam is meant for a 2.4L with a 4g63 head. i guess the previous owner put that there

it seems like the previous owner bought used cam's and bought 2 of them with 1 mark on each cam gear, the one thats on my exhaust must;ve been for the intake and he added another intake cam, thus confusing me and the mechanic...

I wouldn't recommend it. At a glance it's easy to think that the timing marks are exactly 180* opposite of each other. But they're not. They're off by a few degrees (can't remember how many). That's why you should only use the inner marks to line things up.

If you know any DSM'ers close to you could use their cam gear as a reference and make a mark yourself.

Are you able to post a pic showing the entire exhaust cam gear?

Well TBH I don't see that exhaust gear being a intake gear as intake gear centers are fat circles with short spokes to hold the timing plate on and the exhaust gear center has small circle with four longer spokes and nowhere to bolt on a timing plate. Still I don't see what reason anyone would use a 2.4 intake cam? Maybe someone else knows but I really don't see what the benefit of this would be.:hmm:

Just FYI, the 95's (possibly 96's but not sure) have the cam angle sensor located behind the intake cam gear as opposed to the opposite end of the cam like the heads from other years. That's the reason why your intake cam gear looks different from most of the other ones (it's triggering the sensor). I didn't know about using it with the 2.4L. :)
