Being on a fwd I am always striving to make getting off the line easier, so I thought about some motor mounts. I have a buddy who works at a machine shop and we have made several parts now out of 7075 t6 alum. Since we can do pretty much anything for very cheap. I thought about doing solid 7075 alum motor mounts that we would press in. This would be alot cheaper then buying an $80 prothane motor mount kit. My question is would it be okay to pull off my front and rear motor mounts and bring them in to work on and just leave the engine sitting on the two side ones...maybe put a jack underneath the tranny as well? Or would I have to do these 1 at a time?:hmm:

Also for anyone who has done solid mounts, is the front and rear all I need to do? Or should I do the sides? I just didn't know if they would make a difference since the engine is giong to want to pull back and forth instead of to the sides because of the way its mounted. Thanks guys.:thumb:

The engine will be fine sitting on the 2 mounts while you modify the front/rear ones. If you're paranoid, put a jack under the trans or oil pan. IMO, just do the front/rear. Check that link for more opinions.

Yea I looked at that before making the thread, they look great! I will be able to make a set of those very easily.

Thanks for the input that will make things alot easier letting it sit on two mounts!:rocks:

Yes you should make a few extra....Ill buy a set from you :)

I am not looking to make money with any parts I make myself. Especially something I have not even road tested and abused yet. I am only looking for ways to better my own car. Although it may sound silly, freak accidents do happen (even with solid chunks of aircraft grade aluminum), and to add to it I could not feel responsible for any accidents that could happen with something I made personally.

However I will do some updates in the future to show you guys how they turn out and how I like them.

UPDATE:

Well we went ahead and started on the mounts. My front one seems to be bent beyond use for an insert so we are going to re-create it tomarrow out of steel stock and then machine an aluminum insert for that one as well. For now I have pictures of how the rear one turned out. Let me know what you guys think.

I hope you checked for thickness because that's looks like too much aluminum. Mine doesn't stick out that much past the mount.
