air filter box question

ok so i just replaced my old air filter with a k&n air filter. now my question is, what's the main perpuse of that box that covers it? is it just for placement purposes or wat? and is it necessary to put it back on?

It just locates the filter in a convenient location and silences the intake noise.

but is it required to cover the filter? or can i just leave it completely off?

It's not required to have the top of the box. Just make sure that the filter is held against the intake pipe so unfiltered air can't get it. It's actually a free mod.

The snorkle on the stock airbox draws in cooler air (than the engine room) from inside the fender.
