air coming out of dip stick need help

Air coming out of dipstick tube is common on our cars. Some cars under boost can actually push the dipstick out of its tube. Usually air from the dipstick tube indicates bad piston rings. On my car, it indicated broken piston ring lands. Put new pistons/rings in and no more air.

You know what, I have never found a PCV valve on my car. Where is it at. I have seen them on other cars, but never on mine.

well you have a choice ... you can do all that or if you want you can go out and buy a new dipstick for your car and check for leaks then I had the same problem my dipstick flew out had my motor checked out it was fine then i changed dipsticks , no leak or anything the o ringso n the dipstick had worn down

It's what should be threaded into the rocker cover where the hose runs to the intake manifold. It also has to seal under boost pressure so that the turbo isn't pressurizing the crankcase and blow oil vapor out the breather line.

Since there aren't many turbo cars using the same PCV you have to test each to make sure that they do seal under reverse flow. The NA cars don't really have that requirement but it's a big deal with a turbo car.

Not having the valve is also a big intake leak since the air bypasses the throttle butterfly and can cause idle surging.

Your PVC valve is on the top left (passenger side) corner of the Valve Cover.

Hmmm. Ok. I didn't realize that was it. I haven't ever seen one made of metal. All the ones I remember are made of plastic.

Ok ignore the first post i made.

How would you test this anywhos outside of taking the valve off and see if it rattles or not-being that if it rattles it's okey .. as I've done with many-a-PVC valves - both plastic and metal.

(Congrats Steve: making 9000 posts ...:) )

thx-DSM

Push 20 psi through it backwards and see if it leaks...and $20 says it will, even if it's new. :)

Look through the enormous "stupid PCV thread". You can get a plastic check valve from US Plastics for $1.49 that will fix that leaking PCV.

As for the worn rings, make sure the engine is warmed up before doing a BLT. Just like with a compression test, you need to have the metal all warmed up for best results. And... even a new motor can and probably will show some air leaking past the rings, depending on how tightly it is toleranced.

My car did that when i had a blown headgasket. If your car is runing hot thats what it is...but thats the only time that ever happened. But thats what i think and i believe thats what it is.

The OP has said nothing at all that would lead me to think he has blown HG.

As he stated, he simply has air in the crankcase, which is both common and normal if it's not excessive.

Yeah i understand that. But out of all the problems i had, thats what was wrong with mine and it was weird and also a ton of air. Everytime i put my dipstick back in it would blow it right back out with oil:D, But could be a different case here.

I was about to order that $1.49 piece but the shipping is $7.31 and for 2 of them shipping is $8.41. Thats ridiculous for a tiny little piece of plastic. I'll try to find something locally or elsewhere online.

I think even if you don't have a welder you could chop a piece of metal and drill a hole, weld it on, get a stainless hardware store spring and make your own for like $15. It is a good idea and you would risk burning thru your dipstick tube. Still if you bought a brand new dipstick and tube it would be close to $40-50 so not a bad price if you needed it.

Post something up in the WTB classifieds. You may get lucky; there were a few people around here at one time that bought them in bulk and might ship you one for cheap.

I had a few, but I'm down to my last one.

If you know someone with a welder, it's easy to make one that looks clean and works for practically nothing. Here is what I did with mine just for some insurance, even though the dipstick is new and I no longer have CC pressure issues.

I welded an M6 bolt to the tube, and made a small clamp out of some scrap .090" sheetmetal. A wingnut and lock washer holds it in place.

That looks alot cleaner than a spring. Nice work! Thats even cheaper, maybe a dollar if you bought everything new and welded it yourself. Free if you dig in your tool junk drawer.
