We're building an engine for our school project. Our 7 bolt motor is not looking too hot. We've got a 6 bolt ready for a rebuild. That said, we weren't trying to spend a ton of money on this. I don't think we need all forged internals (though it'd be nice).

What's the cheapest reliable piston set?

What's on the cheapest side of the "performance" piston options?

What do you guys think of this set off Ebay- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nippon-Raci...ash=item2a61431610:g:SaoAAOxyni9TCZ4h&vxp=mtr

That said, I figured out 1g rods would be fine... Should I just try to locate some 2g pistons and machine to fit?

Cheap is a subjective word, but basically we want to keep the budget low, without being stupid...

BONUS QUESTION- How much HP is a stock 1g crank good for on a properly tuned/built motor?

Npr pistons have been proven to work well as stock replacements.

Performance side you can get wisecos and Manley off the shelf, as well as a few other brands. You'll spend a good amount more for forged, but unless your planning over 500 hp I wouldn't bother really.

Then again since this will be a learning application, the damage resistance a forged piston can afforday be a good option.

Where can one pick up a nice set of stock pistons?

I do plan on checking our current pistons to see if they are reusable, but I assume we maybe going bigger. We'll just have to wait until next week and see where we are at.

honestly, if you can budget the money go with forged pistons, and eagle rods it will likely be around $700-$900 give or take to get them, making the 6 bolt rods fit costs money and time, that you can save by buying eagle rods.

but lets assume you want the value menu LOL 500hp or less, will do for your project, get acl race series main and rod bearings or the king brand [both are decent but I personally would go with acl], then run the evo 9 pistons on 6 bolt rods [machining will be needed IIRC], but the evo 9 pistons are just a tad stronger then the dsm ones, but at about the same cost, and you might even locate an evo 9 owner thats selling his old evo 9 oem pistons for cheep. get an oem balance shaft eliminator kit as well it's cheep and frees up some rotating mass and adds some reliability.

The 4g63t cranks have been seen handling north of 1000hp+ assuming everything is balanced right and tuned correctly.

Also what all else are you planing for the cylinder head cams valves etc?

Right now we were planning on just sticking with what we've got (which does include some larger, unidentified, cams) until we got it running. It came to us not running, so we're getting a base established first.
