Are the stock pistons in a 4g63t pressed into the rods or is there a retaining ring?

they are pressed fit, they are not free floating. So they have no clip at the end

the wrist pin has to be pressed out... then the small end of the rod is heated to about 1200 degrees to expand the the hole and moving very quickly the rod is placed in the piston and the wrist pin is pushed thu the rod end.. when it cools it shrinks up around the wrist pin holding it in place.

If the rod is heated too much the rod can be weakened and cause a failure, the wrist pin may slide out, or the rod itself will break.
