It doesnt appear that the stub shaft is installed correctly. Who did the BSE?
I run ACL pumps but always take them apart for inspection and BSE if the motor is being built like that, then put it back together with assembly lube.

Gears were pre lubed with assembly lube. She feels good when the gears are fully packed. But after a few rotations and the lube starts to dissipate it starts locking up. The pump locks without the stubby as well.

Oem spins smoothly with out the stub and with the
    stub.

All this is before installation. I was prepping the pump and getting ready for install.

Positive that the stub shaft bolt is/was tight?

As long as its tight and locktited in then its all I do so that sounds ok. Take the cover bolts out and take a look inside. Shoot a picture or two, I'm interested in what is going on.

Well she's scored but I have to wonder what happened. Was debris in the gears too?
Looked like bearing flakes in one picture.

Gears are clean and with no scoring. There is zero debris. I’m in the process of cleaning my old oil pump gasket off when you asked for pics and had a semi clean/dirty micro towel to clean off the assembly lube off the new front case cover. Needless to say I will be reusing my oem one.
Appreciate all the input and will leave it as sh** happens. I’m not knocking on ACL pumps. I would happily get another one in a separate case but for this engine I’m just gonna stock the factory one.

Dont fix what isn't broke. I understand the frustration with the pump tho. Did it ever have pressure? Or did it go down gradually?
I'm not picking on or at you, just puzzled myself. :hmm:

Doing a full rebuild because the cylinder walls on 2-3 were damaged. Acl pump was replacement as maintenance even tho oem didn’t have issues.

Engine is in the process of being completed and getting ready to drop in.

That acl pump has only been turned by hand and wasn’t ever installed on my engine. Just prepped.

Junk! there is no better quality pump at this time than the oem pump, I will use a well used oem pump over a new China pump any day of the week, you can tell that the machining is not even touching in certain places, there is no quality control on cheap stuff like that, thats what makes the difference, at the oem that pump would have been tossed in the blem pile.

I was under the impression that the pump shouldnt be spun unless u have it packed with assembly lube or oil. The grease the pump comes with isn’t sufficient to prime the motor. You install it like that , you’ll have no oil pressure. I always take them apart, debur the gears and fill the housing with a heavy assembly lube. All of my customers engines have used acl pumps without fail.

    See post 5

Also in other posts you’ll read this pump was never physically installed in a engine.

Did you check the gear clearance before install?
So far I found the ACL pump has two issues. the first one is oiling issue due to the quality of the oil passage where I mark green in the pics below. and the point is there is a quality difference between individual ACL pumps. actually your pump looks way better than the one I received before. And the 2nd one is as you can see in the last pic, the gear cover flange on some part is way thiner than the OEM one. so I am guessing that if over tighten the gear cover bolts or for some another reason, the cover may be distorted easily and may get an improper gear clearance.
I had used ACL pumps and hadn't had any issues, so far they actually worked good. But I always checked the oil passage and the gear clearance before installing even it's new and try not to over tighten the bolts.

Thanks for your input. The pump actually stopped locking up after removing the gear housing bolts and reinstalling snugly and Not torqued (although still notchy). Im sure the issue lays within that housing. I’m still terrified of this pump tho and will not risk using it haha.
