Ok guys this is my first time tuning a Dsm with more than a AFC and a wideband. Ive searched before posting so i need some info. Where do i buy the software needed to flash and log my Ecu? Can i use my laptop?

Where is a good place/thread to learn the 98/99 ecu and steps to take toward tuning it. Thanks for the help in advance.

I originally had a Haltec e6k in my rx7 so im not a stranger to tuning. Just new to the Dsm and flashable ecu's.

Evoscan.com; They have the cable, and both pieces of software yoeed.

Thanks for the info. Looks like i need the open port 2.0 system? It states that 2.0 does not support data logging and that you need 1.3 to datalog? confused haha

Read on here and EvolutionM.

If you need more options than currently available for the 98/99 ECU, get an Evo 8 ECU instead; all you have to do is swap a few wires. I think I only paid like 50-60 bucks for my Evo ECU on ebay (lucky for me the guy didn't know what he was selling).

Im looking to make 300 whp on fp28 in the future, As for now Im mostly stock. Intake and exhaust running W/g spring pressure. I was having a boost spike problem on the T25 (17-18psi)and the guy i had flash the system does good work but, I live some distance away. I want to learn this sytem myself so i can Tune myself and learn on the small turbo and low power levels so I wont screw anything up on the larger turbo. as it is right now i have a lil knock in the upper Rpm's at annything over 14 psi which after discussing with him could be as little as 3 counts of knock. Still it is something i do not care for. The injectors couldnt be maxed on the stock turbo could they?

ECU Reprogramming
Now I'm confused with this. Special note say it's preferred to used 1.3 instead of 2.0 for us?
Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 Universal USB Cable
And yes you can use a laptop.

Good Luck!

Good luck.

Very informative. Thanks for the link to the vids 4 lurker 4.....Ed1380 still diggin that exhaust ;)

You can datalog with the 2.0 it's just not as fast as the 1.3, but you can only flash with the 2.0 openport.

Excuse me but that is not entirely correct. There are three versions of the Openport 1.3. 1.3D can use EvoScan but cannot flash. 1.3R can use EvoScan and flash but does not have the license to use ECUFlash. 1.3U can use EvoScan and ECUFlash:

EvoScan 1.3U Universal USB Datalogging and Reflashing Cable

On the home page, I clicked on "Cable Selector" on the left panel, then the year (OP car is 1999), then each of the 1.3 versions. All that information that I just said is there.

Most of us with ecuflash just buy a 1.3 Vagcom cable off ebay for 10$.

That is good to know. I am going to go with EvoScan soon but the cost of the cable is what was holding me up.

EDIT: 4Lurker4, I looked up the Vagcom but what about the reflash connector that is needed? There is no place for it to attach to the Vagcom.

Like I said, for our cars the ONLY cable you can flash with is the 2.0 openport. The 1.3 versions with a reflash extension are for Evo's not the Eclipse ecu. They will not work on our cars unless you have an evo ecu swap. Note that the page you referenced does not indicate Ecuflash for 1998-1999 eclipse, there is a reason ;) Care to revise your statement?

This
The reflash connector is only used to flash the ecu. Its not needed to datalog

For evoscan you don't need a reflash connector, only the obd2 port, hence the 1.3 ebay Vagcom cable.

OK I did some more research. The link I posted does not say Eclipse specifically this is true. But it does say 1994-2007 Mitsubishi (the 2.0 page says nothing about Mitsubishi Eclipse FYI). Then I read in their knowledgebase:

"If you have 1996-2006 vehicle of any type, then the Best cable for you would definitely be the openport 1.3U cable. If you only need datalogging without the reflashing then the openport 1.3D cable will be great also.

If you have 2006+ vehicle of any type, then the Best cable for you would definitely be the openport 2.0 cable.

If you have an Evo7/8/9 and will be using EvoScan GPS Navigator for reflashing roms, then 1.3R cable is the best option. You can use EvoScan for reflashing, and EvoScan can edit maps, and you can save Ecuflash roms and flash with EvoScan or EvoScan GPSNav dislpay unit.

If you have an Evo5/6/6.5TME or other 1997-1999 vehicle and want reflashing support, then the best cable for you is the OpenPort 2.0 cable.

If you have a 2007+ Subaru, we have support for OBDII and openport 2.0

If you have a Diesel Mitsubishi or L200, we don't know if it works for you, some do, some don't, try it, we can give you a refund if it doesn't work."

So again, it says 1996 - 2006 of ANY type then use 1.3U, then says "other 1997-1999". What is "other"? LOL.

And I also read 1.3U works unless you have CAN-bus which I've read came out in like 2006 or 2008. Then I did some searching on Google and found this link (even though I could not find it in a Tuners search):

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/387588-evoscan-cable.html

So I recant my previous statement. You were correct. I was confused by unclear wording on EvoScan's website.

For evoscan you don't need a reflash connector, only the obd2 port, hence the 1.3 ebay Vagcom cable.

Does this cable support Live Mapping and tuning? Or are you referring to data logging only? In other words, if I want to change anything (aka flashing) then I need the OpenPort 2.0? But if I just want to datalog then the Vagcom will work? And what about speeds? I read that 2.0 can datalog but does not support Live Mapping or tuning and is slower at reading than 1.3U.

So just to be clear again on my question: Can the Vagcom cable be used Live and is it as fast as the 1.3U cable?

Thanks.

The vagcom cable is just as fast as the 1.3 versions (although a bit faster than the 2.0) as it's the same wire (minus the flash port the U version has). You will not be able to flash using the 1.3 thus you need the 2.0 openport for any map alterations/tuning.

The way you use it is get your logs and come back to your garage, change your maps/tune then reflash your ecu. You can't do it on the fly like DSMlink (both at the same time: Log/tune) with ecuflash/evoscan you do them separately. Thus you can use 2 wires (2.0 to flash and 1.3 to log) and since the 2.0 is expensive, usually, most of us buy the 1.3 off ebay to log (as this is the one you'll use most) to avoid the chance of breaking the 2.0. Although, the 2.0 openport has a small memory card which enables to record without a laptop, which is nice.

The standalone logging with the Openport 2.0 cable and a microSD card is nice. I wired my wideband o2 sensor in through the rear o2 sensor ADC. Now I can just plug the Openport 2.0 adapter in and let it log while race (autox).

If you really wanted to, you can do everything (log/flash) with the 2.0, we just get the 1.3 mostly to make sure we don't break the 2.0 during routine logging. Break a Vagcom, lose only 10$, feels better emotionally LOL

OK that makes sense, thank you. I understand now. So best bet for me is to buy the 2.0 and just get the Vagcom as well unless I want to log while driving without a laptop. Phew. ;)

You got it  then you can add some fun options with ceddymods like antilag, boost gauges showing knock, etc; for a bit more fun ;)

What some do as well (if you love your tune and you like your set up for a long time) sell the 2.0 and keep the 1.3 to keep an eye on things since you won't be changing your tune again. Making this the cheapest tuning option :D

Tons of great stuff here. Can a ELM 327 adapter be used for any of this stuff?
I data log with the torque paid android app via bluetooth.

The ELM 323 things they sell online is pretty much a waste of money. Get the VAG cable and EvoScan if you just want to datalog.

EvoScan is $25. The VAG cable is $10 or 15.
This one is blue tooth no cable, I have seen a cable version. It has worked on every car to pull a live data stream to my phone. I was just curious since I haven't really tried it with my laptop since I only have tuning software for my camaro. I forget what does VAG stand for exactly. I notice there's another port behind the obd2 port. What's that abs?

Just realized you have a non turbo. Nothing in this thread applies to you. Go to the 420a section for logging/tuning help.

As far as I know, that ELM 323 will log through OBD2 like all the other cars you tried it on. And it may be as fast as you can log.

EvoScan is for turbo'd cars.

I was reading this since the car is in the process of getting boosted and I don't want to run mega squirt. I don't think it would be easy to run or wire a evo ecu but it would make tuning somewhat easier. I'm also looking at a trade for a 99 gst so I'm doing my research before I do the trade.
