Ok guys this is my first time tuning a Dsm with more than a AFC and a wideband. Ive searched before posting so i need some info. Where do i buy the software needed to flash and log my Ecu? Can i use my laptop?

Where is a good place/thread to learn the 98/99 ecu and steps to take toward tuning it. Thanks for the help in advance.

I originally had a Haltec e6k in my rx7 so im not a stranger to tuning. Just new to the Dsm and flashable ecu's.

Ok. So since i dont have the stock map anymore due to another shop flashing it how would i go about getting the stock map?

cool so bascially dowload and apply? posting up a few pics of the ride today.

so i just ordered a 1.3u cable and evoscan software, also downloaded ecuflash.

well after reading this thread.. im confused

i understand that i cant flash the ecu (99) with just the 1.3u cable. so, what do i need to do/buy to be able to tune my ecu using evoscan/ecuflash

and just so i understand this correctly the vagcom cable is the audi/vw cable with the cd driver?

You'll need the openport2.0 adapter..

Tactrix Openport 2.0

As for the Vagcom cable I am not 100% sure on that one.

Well considering you already have a 1.3 cable I wouldn't bother buying the vagcom as they both do the same thing.

Recap: You NEED the 2.0 openport to flash your ecu (it also logs like the 1.3 albeit a bit slower, so if you really wanted, that's technically all you need to both flash with ecuflash and log with evoscan). Most of us though buy a 1.3 cable as well (either to make sure the 2.0 openport stays safe by using it rarely apart from flashing or just because some of us tune the ecu once and sell the 2.0 openport, keeping the 1.3 to occasionally monitor the engine). The vagcom cable does the exact same thing as the 1.3 cable you have. Only difference is that the 1.3u cable you have will flash evo 8 ecus (hence it's higher price), but unless you have an evo 8 ecu in your 2g, it's price isn't justified as, for you, it will only act as a 8$ vagcom cable (USB OBD-II-2 KKL 409.1 OBD2 Cable VAG-COM for VW/AUDI | eBay)

Side note: Vagcom cables come with a cd with drivers on it. Don't install them, use the ones that come with the ecuflash or evoscan when it self installs. That's all you need to make it work.

ok got it, thanks guys.

i cant see the cost effectiveness of buying a 2.0 cable until i have a need to tune. i may end up buying it down the road after i have larger injectors and a wideband 02. i also plan on going e85 so the 2.0 cable will come in handy after all those items are purchased.

I was thinking about taking this route, but I talked to a few pro tuners and they said its much easier to invest in a 95 Eprom with DSM link. If you plan to have the car pro tuned, or dynotuned, I would highly recommend DSMlink. its easier to work with and tuners can tune the car in much faster, resulting in cheaper tuning costs!

Any shop that tunes EVOs should be able to tune a 98/99 ECU with the 2.0 cable & the Ceddymods. Its basically the same setup...
