Well considering all the positive messages you guys sent it made me realize I want to keep going. Even if it is just part to part 15 minutes here 30 minutes. Been that way since day one with this car, makes no sense to abandon the build because of a bad set back. Thank you guys I appreciate all of you.

Man, I checked this build thread at a low apparently. Everyone makes mistakes. Learning from them is key though. If you only tried to start it I would imagine that the pistons are fine 👍🏼.

Hopefully it’s just a bent valve or two. Can’t say I ever hoped for bent valves but once again if the motor wasn’t running a simple valve replacement with some lapping compound would get you going again.

I’ve been in situations before with life where I think about what to do and with a family now myself you always need to consider that. For me anymore it’s not just the money it’s the time to find for myself yet balancing time with them.

Good luck brother, Daniel

I greatly appreciate that.

Took a bite out. Next the cams tomorrow. Fingers crossed there isn't a hole in any of the pistons

Yeah it looks valves are bent. The pistons are probably fine as long as if you didn't drop the valve head into combustion chamber, but I would be worried for damage on the rocker arms, lifters, cams and head cam journals. (You don't probably need to be worried much about those if the engine speed was low when it happened.) Let's hope nothing more than bent valves.
When the engine got stalled, was it at idle? or while you were revving up?

I found a full set of valves. Not sure if they are any good. I know they are very cheap but that's kind of the point.

So if these are OK now I just need a trusty basic HG to replace the old one.

Almost immediately in never made it to an idle.
So can you tell from the picture there are failed valves? How many do you think?
You can see rocker arms/lifters height are different even in the same cylinder number (Or you can see some rocker arms are rattling), which mean valves are bent and lifters are bled down. So I guess you would need a full set with both side intake/exhaust. But anyways first you have to physically inspect everything to know what exactly you would need to repair.
One thing I am worried about is, probably this is just an optical illusion from light reflection, but in the pic, the position of intake cam lobes cylinder #2 look like in the different position.

I guess nothing is wrong with those. I have even used a couple of cheaper eBay valve sets like in the link below. Actually I didn't see any issues. They worked just fine as it should.

If the damage is minimum and the issue is only bent valves, minimum things you would need are like below if you would replace them by yourself. (Just for example, you would know what you would need after inspecting everything and may find better deals in somewhere)
- Valve set
- Valve spring compressor (In case if you don't have it)
- Valve lapping tool/Compound (In case if you don't have it)
- New head gasket
- Steam seals (In case if you remove them when you lap the valves. If you wouldn't remove them then you wouldn't need)

Well guys jeffy needs some new valves. Several bent exhaust valves I'd say. Thank you Hiroshi for the the cams out, spring/lifter inspection. Really sheds a bit of light on what the engine needs. Inspected the rockers, cams, cam bearings, and lifters. They look undamaged. The valves and guides are another story.

Can't remember but is this hole supposed to be there?
You mean the one looks like half open? If so, yes that's supposed to be there. That's one of oil drain from the head to oil pan. It's just the casting flash on the head is still there, you can clean it up when you remove the head.

I see thank you. So I'm down to just removing from the thermostat housing and the head will lift. Decided not to finish up tonight don't want to take a coolant bath before bed.

Damn Jeffy, you definitely got them good brother. I’ve seen bent valves before, I’ve also seen them break at the valve spring keeper and fall in. Can’t say I’ve seen them break into multiple pieces like that.

These OE valves or some other brand, I’m just curious at this point.

They are 100% oem. The only valvetrain mod is bc cams.

So surface damage to the piston crown no holes though. But the exhaust valves are a different story. Not sure how the pistons didn't get holes punched in them is beyond me.
So all the broken exhaust valve heads were in the combustion chamber or you broke them to removed the valves? The timing was completely wrong and the valves and the pistons crush much harder than I imagined. For sure the valve guides would need to be replaced. If you can source a good condition used head with valves from a junk yard or a partout car may be cheaper.

Any body ever seen some shit like this?
Yeah I even had a much worse case. If the valves would contact the pistons at much higher engine speed, the damage would be much much worse. You can even crack the head.

U know Hiroshi you're right. Maybe I should just get a different head, never considered it.

Well i guess I feel a ton better about this misfortune with my valves. Found some issues with previous assembly. Leaking intake gasket and a breech between a coolant jacket and piston.
I
apparently gouged the head connecting a coolant jacket and piston.time to fix those. It would explain why it was running funny and coolant was pressuring.

I want to get one of those thick sealing gaskets like I had on my neon.

Am I the only one who can’t see clearly? ;)
