92 laser no start, but fires

I just bought a 1992 N/T plymouth laser about a month ago. The car ran fine for a couple weeks but after driving in rush hour one day the car started to bog down and wanted to die. I parked it and the next day ran fine for about 15 minutes but then started to bog and want to die. did this for a couple weeks and I was able to get to work and home every day without it dieing but if I went any further the longer the motor ran the worse it would run.

Went out to start it this morning (very cold, -10) and the car fired and almost started and then died. Now only turns over and you can hear it slightly fire.

I Changed the plugs and they were very black and smelled bad of gas.

Car still doesnt start. Any ideas? This is my winter beater and I need to get to work tomorrow. Any help is very much appreciated.

It could very well be a coolant temp sensor messing with your ecu. Pull out the new plugs and see if they are saturated with fuel. Also unplug the vac hose to your fpr and see if you have fuel in the hose also. My old na did almost the same thing and it ended up being a bad fpr flooding the engine. Keep us updated....

Thank you, I will check that in the morning. Another thing I forgot to note that when the car would start running bad (when it actually ran) if i turned it off and let it sit maybe 10 minutes it would run good right away but then after a couple minutes it would start bogging out again and try to die.

And would a coolant temp sensor make the car not start?

well check your battery also, cold cranking causes it to die (incase you didnt know) try jumping it

also check for compression if you can, theres a few things that could be wrong but most people will need a little more info, you've got a good amount so far but definitely check your battery and see if you can get it started then

is your fuel pump turning on? if its not check the fuses.

it should be if hes getting fuel on the plugs, maybe not though but i would assume it is

I know in my 2g when i turn the key to on i can hear the fuel pump whine, do 1g's do this as well? I put a charger on the battery and it held a perfect charge.

yea, you will have to really listen but all cars make a humming noise when the pump turns on, its just harder to hear in some cars

Not that I'm aware of, usually a cts causes a run rich problem. If you let your car sit for a bit it will start back up and idle fine. Check your maf connections. Sounds like your running very rich. You could also have a weak ignition system. . It should be blue. If you have a tester, it should jump 25kv. If you don't use a good spark plug and gap it to 60k and it should arc with no problem. And just an off note question. What's your compression.

Yea the gas mileage got pretty bad as soon as the problem first started. No clue what the compression is. I dont have a tester.

Update: I went out this morning and it started up better in the cold then it ever has, I just let it sit for a couple days and I guess that helped.

It seemed to be running great until i hit stop and go traffic on my way to work. The plugs get covered in gas. High RPM or driving regular on an open road it runs fine but as soon as I hit a neighborhood or rush hour the car "floods" and out the car bogs down and tries to die. I have to rev it up really high to keep it from dieing.

Anyone know what could be causing this?
