My 92 Laser A/T 2.0L N/T has had continuing starting issues the last couple months. It stopped working altogether a couple days ago. Originally it would have some trouble cranking but most of the time eventually get going. Sometimes I had to try again. On the day it died for good I tried to start it, would crank for a couple seconds while sounding progressively weaker then stop. I try again and the crank would be shorter then stop. It ended up that right now when I turn the key it just clicks.

I have replaced the starter and that did no good. The battery terminals are clean and not corroded.

These are the possibilities I'm working on:

1. Neutral Safety Switch - I have located the physical switch and messed around with moving the Manual Control lever but have not removed the switch. I am under the impressed this is controlled electronically and I can disable it through jumping or disabling a wire from the shift stick under the dash somewhere? Can anyone help with locating or describing this?

2. Ignition Coil & Etc system - I tried a spark test in one of my plugs by turning the key and holding the wire near a ground in the car. Nothing. I am wondering if it isnt being told to ignite because the NSS may be malfunctioning? Or would they spark anyway?

3. Actual Battery Power - I don't have a voltmeter but I plan on testing the battery and a new battery on my car as soon as I can because I know it needs quite a few amps to get the starter going. I connected my battery to my old starter while outside the car and all I got it to do was click, not start the motor. Should it be starting with a good battery?

Any insights or alternatives are appreciated, thanks for your help. I'm heading to work overnight but I plan on working on this in the morning!

Got my old battery tested, said they needed to replace it. Replaced the battery, no help. New terminals and everything. Going to test the ignition coil and switch tomorrow.

I'm having the same problem, i have a 91 talon awd 5 speed , and i replaced the starter, same think, it would click, i tried then jumping the car to see if it starts , nope ... if i push start it, it will fire right up

the batt reads 12.5 then when u try to crank like 11.8-11.5 when i push start it its charges at 14.5 alt is working

any help thanks :talon:

my brother was having this problem on his GVR4 and we solved it. i told him in advanced to check is neutral safety switch - it might be worn out. the night his car craped out i inspected his starter, batterie and alternator. tis all good. next day i said clutch switch! any hoot, that lazy guy... i checked out the switch and depressed his clutch and watched the clutch switch go right threw it. then found fragments of a plastic plug that would fit nicely in the clutch bar. :notgood: i pressed in his switch and had him attempt to fire the car up. then the car started just fine. then i ran over to my talon and checked my switch and saw how long the plug/screw needed to be. we tossed on a bolt and nut in the small hole and poof, all better now. FYI the reason i think they used a plastic plug for that rather than a steel shim or screw was due to friction and ware. ...

oh the screw/plug needs to extend about 1/8th of a inch. play with it a little, see how it presses down the safety switch. oh yea have fun fixing your car upside down.

chad: mom do you know where the neutral safety switch in the 1stgen AT NT's?
mom: they don't have one, the ?inhibitor? is in the trans itself....

mom works for mitsu :dsm:
