How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Crank walk is really a goof up by mitsubishi, word from the company has it that mitsu had a batch of bad cranks slightly out of round, eventually would wear themselves rite out of the mains, however the percentage of cars effected wasn't enough for a recall, thanks mitsu...

I've searched the forums and looked at the VFAQ and I still am questioning. The guy I bought it from says it's a 6 bolt. I looked at the VFAQ and my pic seems to match the 7 bolt one (unless I just happen to have a dent in the spot that distinguishes the two). I would appreciate it if someone could confirm either way if it's a 6 bolt of 7 bolt. He told me the engine was from a 92 Talon. I will post 2 pics for you...one of the head and one of the underside of the oil pan. If this is not the right shot to be looking at the oil pan (which might also be why I can't figure it out) please let me know which angle I should be looking at it.

Thanks!

Yes it is a 6 bolt. Here is a link which clearly shows you why:

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/early-late-engine.html

FWIW, it looks like whoever did the swap reused the 2G throttle body (the vacuum ports point towards the drivers side). I can't tell for sure if the intake manifold is 1G or 2G. But if it is a 1G you can consider getting a 1G TB to match the 60mm opening of the IM or having the 2G bored out. It will give you a little performance boost. Just thought you would like to know.

Edit: On second glance it does look like you have a 1G IM (location of coils).

Or should I be looking at the top of the oil pan (closest to the engine) instead of the side?

As in relation to the following pics, should I be looking at the green parts instead of the blue section? (Is the blue section maybe just a dent in the pan or a built-in indent?) In the first pic, the green section is straight across vs. the second pic where it isn't straight across. Is that what I should be looking at?

Note the early oilpan side bumps out towards you in the circled area, the late pan bumps in.
(From http://www.vfaq.com/mods/early-late-engine.html)

Doesn't it look like the pan bumps in on the side? Wouldn't it be a 7 bolt then?

That's strange. The first time I looked at it I thought the side of the pan was bulging out.
Now that I look at it again it seems as if it is concave. Damn astigmatism.:coy:

snowboarder714, a more definitive way to tell is to get under there and run your hand along the side and feel if it bulges out or dips inwards. Let us know so I can figure out if I am losing it.LOL

alright here's the deal...i have a 95 GSX Eclipse and i'm utilizing the original 7 bolt motor only i've had it rebuilt with some extras. The problem is when i pulled the motor the actual fitting for the stock oil feed line bent inside the oil filter housing and messed up the threads. now i know that the 7 bolt oil filter housings are water cooled and the 6 bolts are externally cooled, which would be no problem...but will i have problems with the functionality of the housing itself being able to send oil adequately? i've talked to slowboys and they told me the port holes for the 7 bolt are smaller than the 6 bolt where it comes from the block to the actual housing. But is that really a big deal??? WTF I've looked everywhere for answers but i haven't gotten a definite NO or YES!!! so if anybody knows...help me out

I'm doing a 6 bolt swap right now. I was actually at U Pull It today getting a 6 bolt oil filter assembly housing, because they are not compatible with each other. Also, not all of the 6 bolt oil filter housings are air cooled. That's only on 1990 and older models. After 1990 they went with the water cooled housing. So just go to a junkyard and you can pick up a 7 bolt housing.

Hey guys. I have searched the forums a couple times and did not find any info on this. I bought a 93 talon AWD with a 7 bolt engine. The other day my timing belt tensioner went, and my engine went along with it. I bought a 1g 6 bolt engine to swap in. It is fully rebuilt and ready to go. Other than a flywheel are there any other pieces that I need to swap this engine into my 1g 6 bolt? I assume it will mate up to my transmission without any troubles. Thanks for the info.

Hi!

I have a 95 GST FWD w/ a 6 BOLT SWAP which I'm about to sell, but would like to use some parts from it to put onto my blue 97 GST.

I WOULD SWAP THE WHOLE MOTOR, but due to funds, I cannot, and I have to sell the 95 GST in running condition.

It has a 1G Oil cooler on it, and I was wondering if it is easy to swap that oil cooler onto my 7 bolt motor.

Do I need to swap the whole assembly that bolts up to the engine and houses the oil filter?

Thanks!

Mark

oh well. I guess I don't need it anyways, it's not like I'm road racing my car or going all out HIGH HP...

I'm leavin it on the 95 GST so I guess thats another selling point now...

Hey Spinz4 You ever rebuilt a 4G63T? If you have, I'd like to ask you a few questions since you're on the island..

later bro!

Mark

You could buy the filter housing of an EVO found here(scroll to the middle where it says for 7 bolt motor):
http://www.machv.com/exoilcoolfil.html
I believe the connections on the 1g lines will bolt up to the EVO housing. Id call MachV just to be sure. I dont see why it wouldnt work if you maybe fabbed up a mount for the cooler.
